OoShots of initial attempts on 1/8" HRS, SS, and Al with the 200DX.  Finally listened to da crew and "shiny cleaned" all metal 'cept for the SS.  Used Al-dedicated SS brush on the Al, followed by Acetone.  What a difference in the bead lay.  Note: T-Joint is SS, while the final two samples are HRS. While far from NASA-quality, starting to "get the flow" when ripping TIG using filler or autogenous.  Need to eliminate porosity, consistently move forward, and better manage heat-to-metal input (especially w/ the SS).  Side Note:  had to shut her down.  In the midst of cleaning and repairing a leaky Proco pump and Cu tubing in the CM4, thanks in large part to 7A749's technical consult and direct (from-afar) assistance.  Switching to MIG ops tomorrow for forward=progress on the Welding Table. Reply:@ Turk - IRT which item? All, one, two? You have any idea what my settings were, or filler used? Agree on increasing the rate of advance for HAZ control but 100A, 125A, and 150A for 1/8" SS (1/16" ER308L filler), MS (1/16" ER702-2 filler), and Al (3/32" 4034 filler) coupons, respectively, is a solid starting baseline.  Check?"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:The wide heat patterns on the last two pics could be from not having enough amps available thus having to wait longer for the puddle to form. To help advancement timing I also would recommend playing your favorite music in the background to help give rhythemDynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:Also to help even length of advancement advance to the leading edge of the pool each time you advance. I am learning too, just passing on what I see based on what I have learnedDynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:@ Turk - Ah, makes sense.  Pandora was serving me up some Al DiMeola, Paco De Lucia, and Rodrigo y Gabriella. Will kick up the amps a bit and translate forward a bit quicker with "eyes on" puddle.Thx brah!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I wouldn't mind seeing larger more detailed picts of the beads if you are looking for suggestions and advise. The picts are really just too small to see enough detail.Lap joint at the bottom I do see what looks like not enough filler in several places. Top edge of that weld left of center looks better than the top toe on the right. I see the need to work on consistency issues in all the welds. The outside corner joint, I'd like to see picts of both sides as well as an end on or angled shot so I can see how tall the bead is. I often find one of the bigger problems with outside corners is that guys have a tendency to favor one side of the joint over the other, usually the side closest to them. That's usually because they don't have the torch centered on the middle of the joint and straight up and down side to side..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:@ DSW - understand. Yes, def looking for input.  Will post enhanced pics today.  Know for a fact that I tend to NOT feed in enough filler, esp. when welding SS and mild steel.  Cross-section (side view) reveals not a solid 45deg plane of filler, but rather a shallow (more concave) weld profile.  This tells me that fusion anf overall strength is sub-standard. Def need to push more filler in during each add cycle.  Believe the thin OCJ was autogenous........yes, the torch slightly favored the side closest to operator.  Ok, from now on will post larger and close-up shots of welded items.  Mahalo for your quick reply and have a blessed Easter Day."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
