One of the hydraulic motors died on the spreader. Of course the hub was impossible to remove. Compost rusts everything. Torched the disc off the motor. Once the motor was out the hub was pressed off. Had the motor rebuilt. Decided to make a new disc rather than rebuild the old one. Can't tell from the picture but it's a mess. Designed the part in cad and cut it out. Cleaned up the old hub on on the lathe. I made a little centering jig to help center the hub while welding. In all it didn't take long. I cut out a second one to do the other side... but that's a job for another day. One of these days it would be nice to get a weld positioner. Attached Images
Reply:I used to do a lot of fertilizer spreaders with slinger disc like the one in the pic. Compost and nitrogen fertilizer eat the crap out of everything and make repair work interesting. I'm like you I just got in the habit of replacing the pressed on or slip on part if it was stuck. Tried too many times to get em off without bending em up and it just dont happen. Cheaper and better to just replace em in the long run. I know that was one of the things that convinced me that anti-seize was a good thing. Now I paint em up liberally before final re-assembly. That way when I see it again in a few years it will still come apart without resorting to the flame wrench and BFH. So a weld positioner is on your Santa list, it's been on mine for a while but eating takes precedence right now...BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys? Trade?
Reply:Dumb question: How do you cut the keyway out of the center of a tube / pipe?Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:Hi forhire, Good job on the rebuild, you do nice work. As for the positioner, you can make do with scraps you may already have lying around. I made this one from a odd faceplate I picked up, the bearing out of an old chevy water pump, an oversized nut and some bar stock. Just get everything in position and walk it with you finders and it comes out looking like it was machine welded. I also made one with a small motor. These work until you can find that dream positioner. Attached Images

Reply:For a positioner ( I don't have or need one but) why couldn't you just take your platform drop a shaft down thru a bearing and put a large hand wheel on the other end. So that as you sit in your stool that you rest your feet on the large hand wheel and slowly rotate it as required. That way you've got reverse and infinite speed control. You could make the thing so it drops into your vice so that would take care of bench mounting. Just my uneducated two cents worth. And (if this is dumb) that take note of my username it says it all.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:Did Art rebuild the hydraulic motor? I'm working on a homemade positioner right now using a treadmill motor & controls and when (if?) Reply:Figured I better take a picture of the disc installed on the spreader. We re-used the old blades to save time. I'm sure the paint will be gone in a few days Attached Images

Reply:Different spreader... the original is still going strong. This disc broke off the hub. It's been a couple years... and the spare spreader disc I cut out can't be found. So... with the truck is in the field... this was a quick fix. Pressed off the motor. Cleaned everything a bit with the grinder. Put the broken hub and disc together and tacked it... then adjusted it with the big hammer. Threw it on the positioner and went to town on it. Sure beats messing with it in the field. I'm sure I'll find the spare disc tomorrow. Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 04-01-2013 at 10:31 PM.
Reply:More spreader parts... today a gate handle broke and fell off someplace.Started with a short length of round bar from the scrap bin. Drilled to 3/4" and machined to length. Cut the handle from some 1/4" plate on the plasma table and welded it on.Hopefully the old handle will be found before bailer "finds" it later this summer. Attached Images |
