I'm getting ready to build a welding table. My question is, cold rolled or hot rolled for the top. Advantages and disadvantages of each. I'm fairly new to fabricating things and I'm not sure i know the difference.
Reply:Hot rolled. Cheaper and the mill scale will prevent splatter from sticking.Syncrowave 300Maxtron 450, S-52E, 30A

Reply:Look for options too. I bought an entire complete table off CL just for the top and scrapped everything else. It was a quarter the price of what the steel plate would have been new.
Reply:I would love to have an aluminum top table.

Reply:One of those nifty blast welded aluminum/steel or stainless plates would be perfect for a table top!
Reply:We have two steel tables that we cut and attached a piece of roughly 3/16 aluminum sheet to. Works great. All we work with is stainless, so with aluminum we dont have to worry about cross contamination. I'd reccomend it.
Reply:Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of the stronghand tables with the holes for fixturing. Has anybody built anything like that? Are slots for fixturing a better idea?
Reply:I found a piece of tread plate 1/2" thick 4'x10' for $125. Would this work if I turned the smooth side up? It's too big for what I need but I can cut it down.

Reply:That's a great price but the back side of tread plate isn't smooth. BUT it might be fairly smooth given the thicness of the plate. Check it out.Syncrowave 300Maxtron 450, S-52E, 30A
Reply:If you make a stainless top, the dingleballs of spatter will stick to it.---No good deed goes unpunished---
Reply:Don't want no dingle balls!
