We recently got a new horiz band saw with the coolant/lubricant pump. Our old one never had lubrication. What kind of lube should we use? The manual mentioned water based, or cutting oil. I would think cutting oil would make a mess, and require a lot of clean up of the material after cutting.  I tried Grainger, they have several listed,  salesman tried selling me a water soluble product that was $34 per gallon. I'm confused.......
Reply:Cutting oil will be just fine.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks!
Reply:The $34.00 per gallon is a bit deceiving.  It is  water  soluble, I don't know the dilution rate, but it's probably something like, two oz. to a quart of water.Check with the salesman! If you use this it wipes up easy, (no solvent), and is really a good deal dollar wise. By the smallest container they have and give it a try.Everybody likes something different, but this is what I would use.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:Thats a good point I didn't think of!  I've used cutting oil for drilling and always thought it made a mess with the material, and was tough to totally clean off .  The product they are selling is RUSTLICK ULTRACUT.
Reply:The water solubles are great, and don't tend to lead to rust if used properly. The water cools, and the soluble oil stays when the water vaporates. You add water for makeup, since the oils componant doesn't evaporate.I have a friend that swears by a couple teaspoonfuls of fresh lath way oil, just enough Dawn dish detergent to make it mix, and about a gallon of water. Cheap, seems to work. I'v never tried it. We are on the same 5gl bucket of commercial slop at work that was there five years ago. It gets changed out maybe once a year.
Reply:Water based cutting oil is what is recommended for horizontal bandsaws. The mix ratio for most of these oils is only 10% oil and 90% water. This mix will be all the lubricate and cooling you need and as stated above is cleans of with a rag and welds with no trouble.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Be careful when adding other chemicals, it may contain chlorine which can attack stainless steel.
Reply:We use the lenox band aide kind here at work.  We put maybe a 1/2" in the bottom of a 5 gal. bucket and fill the rest with water.  It mixes pretty clear so there's not that milky looking coolant everywhere.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Boy. I'm glad I asked the question here! You guys really know your stuff!
Reply:I got the Rustlick today. It says to dilute with 10-20 parts water!  So the gallon of the stuff actually makes 10 to 20 gallons of lubricant.
Reply:I bought a 5 gallon bucket of water soluable oil from Union 76 for about 45dollars...we have a lot of oil distributors here. I don't think I have used 1/2 gallon since I bought it 5 or 6 years ago. It works excellent and has never been a problem in my welds. Reply:I use my bandsaw on an infrequent basis, so I was worried that it would rust from the water in the coolant.  Luckily, I have a friend who works at a lubricant plant as a tanker driver.  He put a 5 gallon bucket under one of the drain valves as he was cleaning the tank for the next product.  I got Sunoco Sunnycut 444.  It works well and no rust on the saw or blade.  I have no idea of the retail price, or even if it is available in 5 gallon pails.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:I also keep a simple spray bottle of the mix at the drill press, and when using the mag drill with annular cutters. I don't have a coolant system there and the water soluble oil mix is a great lube/coolant and is a simple clean-up.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
