Earlier this year while having to saw 3tons of 2"x4"x3/8" and 2"x6"x3/8" tubing for a project I came close to ordering a new bandsaw. The old Carolina saw has served me well and I can't complain but that was asking more than she really wanted to give. However I decided to hold off. Then the first part of June I got a order where I needed to saw 2tons of 3"x3/16" wall square tubing then immediately got another order for another batch of the same thing as the first. That made me really wish I'd ordered the new saw. The old Carolina ran nearly the whole month of June to cut the 5 tons of material up. That made up my mind right then that I needed the new saw so I got on the phone. Unfortunately they where backed up and while they promised to ship mine early it didn't happen. Thus it wasn't till July  30th that it arrived.   We where busy but due to chance of rain and needing to get the saw inside we took thursday afternoon and friday of last week to move the bolt bins, dig out the floor (it took a air powered tile scraper to cut the dirt out), put in sand, and put down the rubber mats so we could get the new saw in place. Saturday I spent putting some of the bolt bins back and moving the rollers to the higher height of the new saw (as well as working on need it now projects).   It wasn't till this afternoon that I finally got a chance to do the final changes to the steel rack to make it fit the saw better. I had to raise the tube above the rollers since they'd been raised and the fact that the new saw can take larger stock than the old. While at it we extended those tubes a little longer for more storage. I extended to roller stops so that we wouldn't have to bend under to get the stock on the rollers.   I used the saw last week for one job that needed 3" square tubing mitered and we used it a lot more this week. Every body is real happy how it's working. Definitely a real improvement over the old Carolina (which I still have in the shop in a less than perfect place if we need to run two saws again).  The first three pics are of the new setup and the last two are of the old. Reply:what brand saw is that new one ?? sweet setup! new toys makes the commute to work more exciting.
Reply:Nice. I've got one of those Carolina saws but would love even a used Ellis, let alone a new one. Most of the guys I know who do serious cutting have Ellis saws as well as both tech schools..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Nice saw. Do the Ellis saws run dry? I've heard good things about those dry saws especially with mild steel. Can the Ellis do stainless dry? I almost bought a new saw last year and was planning on setting up my old saw task specific... new saw for aluminum and old saw for steel and stainless.  I have a Do-All and cut a lot of large aluminum round bar which I doubt could be done dry. I could have used a second saw this week for sure.

Reply:Im in the same boat as you right now.   I have 2 marvel 8's for the larger stuff but an old worn out wells saw for the smaller stuff.   Those ellis saws are pretty nice units.   I have a buddy with one he uses every day and it seems to do very well for him.I think my next find is going to have to be a Hydra mech with auto infeed.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Irish, check out this homemade bandsaw feeder I found. Retrofit your saw with a few cylinders... and you'd be in production heaven. Here are a couple short videos:http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...derfeedend.mp4http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...derdropend.mp4

Reply:Originally Posted by irish fixitThat looks great for the short jobs. Unfortunately the production I've been doing lately involves lots of long pieces in heavy tube. Like 8 feet long or 6.5 feet. We do make a number of 1.5 feet pieces of 2x4x3/8" tubing on one of the jobs. It'd would take a good bit work on my roller setup to handle that stuff without supervision (not to mention a little more elaborate feeder). Of course I'm not sure when or if I'll ever get another order for those.
Reply:I fully understand. I would of liked one of the bigger fancy saws myself but I just can't justify it and there's virtually none on the used market around here. That's why I went with the Ellis. It's a good saw and it was priced where I could afford it.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Interesting.  Currently I'm out of the production stuff for the most part. Reply:that's a cool saw, I dont cut as much as you, i'm a home-shop.I've talk to the Ellis people on the phone, and they only recommend people using it dry.  Biggest things i've cut on it is 3x3" cold rolled solid bar, and thick walled 7" aluminum pipe.  The Ellis guy said any coolant will mess with the rubber tires on the wheels.  I didn't ask them about misting system though.  I got mist cooling for my mill and lathe, I'm gonna try it on this saw one of these days. Reply:Coolant sucks and is unnecessary.
Reply:Hey Irish, I couldn't see it in your photo, but do you have the little wire wheel that spins on the blade?  I got my saw use, and the wire wheel didn't come with it (the mounting is fine).  So i've been using it without, if you have the wire wheel, i'm wondering if you can run a couple of cuts with it disengaged, and see if you notice a difference.
Reply:I installed a wire wheel on mine awhile ago and the only material I notice a different with and it does help quite a bit with is aluminum. I haven't taken any pictures of my bandsaw recent enough to show the wheel though. As VPT stated I've run a bandsaw without a wire wheel on it for 20+ years. I've never had one till this saw. For the most part I don't think it does a whole lot though I'm sure it's helping. However I don't cut aluminum very often which is where I do think it would make a difference.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
