My company is trying to weld 304L stainless steel id tags on to astm 572 carbon steel. we are having trouble with liniar cracks along the toe line on the tag side of the weld. we are using E80C 045 metal core wire. our wps parameters only allow us a min of 27 volts and 225 amps. in my mind this is the wrong wire and the setting are way to hot. i think we should be using more like  308L stainless wire in 035. any feed back? or am i just barking up the wrong tree?
Reply:I think you need 309 to weld stainless carbon steel, I could be wrong here but I'm sure I will be corrected if I am.Guy_48Welding is an art......Millermatic 252Lincoln SP175PlusLincoln 225 AC/DC
Reply:Generally 309L is used to weld carbon steel to stainless steel. How thick are the ID tags ? 225 amps sounds quite hot to me.
Reply:It sounds like the OP may also be using 75/25 gas.  The previous posters are correct, 309/L is required.  I like welding stainless with 98/2 (98% Ar, 2% CO2), but I am in the minority there.
Reply:why don't you TIG them with 309?

Reply:Yeah Tig would be the way to go I think......  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:Tig is out of the question due to time it takes. the tags are only 13 gauge, and the only gas we have in the shop is 90/10. 225 amps is way to high with the 045 wire but the 308L wire is 035.
Reply:Using 035 wire, i would try 250 Inches/minute wire feed and 19-20 voltsMauricio

Reply:90/10 is not ideal but it will work if you use 309L wire. E80C is totally the wrong wire for joining stainless to mild steel.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:i thank you all for confirming what i have been telling the QC and higher ups
