is there really a diffrence between machines and how they affect the apprence of your welds! I know some of the very talented welders on some other treads perfer lincons like in the mig like tig tread.
Reply:To some degree. As long as its a decent named brand machine within the capacity of what you are trying to weld, then its more to do with the guy welding than the welder he is using. I have a fancy new inverter but there are tons of guys with huge old machines with big cranks that can weld circles on me. Its like golf clubs. A good set will help only if the guy using it is good.Hobart Handler 210 with SpoolgunHypertherm PM30 PlasmaHTP 221 Tig WelderHF BandsawHF Auto Dark Helmet
Reply:true i was just curious ever thing i own is blue but you see on here in the treads and the guys like ztfab and others use lincons just wondering why red over blue!
Reply:also some people say lincons have a bigger sweet spot. i dont know about that i have only used a lincon a hand full of times in other peoples shop just for a quick time and never wanted to adjust someone elses machine.

Reply:There is definitely a difference in the characteristics of the arc between machines even of the same brand. The lincoln 175+ I had was a very harsh arc compared to my SP250 that has a very soft arc similar to a Migmaster 250... I think the class of machine has as much to do with it as the brandTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:In the transformer based units that have a fixed inductance and slope, the design of the of the components that influences these two variables, can definitely have an effect on the appearance/quality of the results that can be produced. In a 180-200 amp class machine the effect that the design of the machine has on the weld quality becomes very noticeable when comparing the top end performance. An example of this that I have first hand experience with would be a Millermatic 180 VS a Hobart Handler 187/190. The Millermatic 180 produces a crisper arc then the Handler 187/190. On the top end the Miller 180 arc is harsher then the Handler 187/190 arc. The difference in weld bead appearance, ends up being that Miller 180 produces more spatter then the 187/190. Also, the 180 weld puddle doesn't wet out as well as the 187/190 weld puddle. This typically results on the 187/190 weld bead having a smoother appearance to it and a flatter profile. I see the same above top end results when comparing my Millermatic 210 to my Hobart Ironman 230.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice |
