Hydraulic jack question

Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to turn a hydraulic hand powered jack to a air hydraulic jack. I picked up a air hydraulic pump and was looking at some of the jacks and wondering if anyone has converting a regular hand pump jack to air powered? I am thinking I could just place a fitting on the pressure release bolt and make it work.
Reply:All you'd get would be the air pressure times the area of the jack piston,which wouldn't be very much lifting force. Reply:if you get a vane motor, attach a crank arm to the main shaft, and use a connecting rod to connect the crank arm to the little piston that's normally actuated by you pumping the stick, then yes. i've neevr done it, but it makes sense in my head and would avoid the problems mla2ofus is talking about.with full intent and better sense to recognize what is false and part with it.
Reply:I think he is saying that he has an air powered hydraulic pump. Air-over hydraulics, not that he wants to turn a hydraulic jack into a pnuematic jack. I have no idea if removing the release valve and replacing it with a fitting would work or not. How much pressure (psi) does the air-powered pump produce?   You should look for some old porta-power rams. Looks easy to do, and the kits are under $20.00. Just an o-ring, a brass bushing, and 2 little rings.one of the great things about these is that they can be used in any position, upside down or whatever. Regular bottle jacks only work when upright. The rams I have also retract completely and quickly via spring return as soon as the release valve is opened.Oh, if anyone else here is interested in that porta-power unit, I would happily ship it. Reply:I could be wrong but if you try to use the bottle jack w/ the pump connected to the release valve opening,you'll apply high pressure to the outer oil reservoir along w/ the piston. Reply:OK, OK Enough no's. I was just wondering if it would work. I picked up the pump and a few cylinders from a barter, and was just wondering if I could turn some of my other jacks from the manual lifting jack to a easy (non sweating) lifting method.Thanks for the info.
