at work i weld and braze, on the drawings it does not give direction for the weld required but i have to weld a 100mm box section about 4ft tall and 8mm thick to a 16mm plate about 2ft square..i have a couple question's1 what size leg length should the welds have? i am unsure if both are the same or nothow many weld should this have on eash face of the box section? i was thinking a route weld then 2 more weld IF the welds are different leg lengths or 1 if both same lengthits an industrial 3 phase mig welder running .8 wire and I THINK argonshield heavy. ( i could be wrong on the gas i just swap the bottles)dont usually have a first post like thisthanks for taking the time to read look forward to the repliesregards slob.
Reply:a picture or drawing may shed a little more light on what you're asking. also mixing metric and real dimensions is confusing. to me anyway.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:basically asking about how to do the correct fillet weld 16mm with 8mm

Reply:its box section on to plate. like belowi wish to weld all the way around the bottom of the 8mm walled box section fixing it to the 16mm plate. it needs to be strong and my boss has more or less left it to me.. he knows no more than i do although he might say different. be normally only weld sheet
Reply:Don't anybody know?I don't but I do want the job to be strong on completion.Regards slob.
Reply:Personaly, if given no other direction then you have, id be putting an 8mm fillet all the way round the box section, set the welder at around 28-29 volts to get it close to a spray transfer as  you can using argoshield heavy and have at it.Sent from my LG-P716 using Tapatalk
Reply:of thanks for that. I'll cracking on later in the week
Reply:I am VERY new to welding. 99.9% of the other members here at WeldingWeb have forgotten more than I will ever know. Please keep that in mind when you read my reply, okay?--“100mm box section about 4ft tall”  I think you made a typing mistake. 1.2m  = ~4’ (about 4 feet tall)100mm  = ~4” (about 4 inches tall)--8mm = ~ ¼”16mm = ~ ½”-- I do not know what a 3 phase mig welder is and have never used argonshield heavy. I am only replying to you because you have no photos to share and I am afraid all the professionals need photos to be able to help you. My best may not be good enough. --If  I had been instructed to “weld all the way around the bottom of the 8mm walled box section”, I would start by tacking the right side of the 8mm walled box section (tube). After I tacked it, I would “square” it up using a tool like this, http://www.diseno-art.com/images_4/P...eel_square.jpg. Make sure it is square. ----Next I would tack the other side. Then I would square it up again.----I would add another tack in the center on the left side of the tube because you were told to weld all the way around the bottom. ----I would go back to the right side of the tube and weld from tack to tack. I would keep the heat directed to the plate because it is thicker than the tube and would weld straight across quickly. I would not try to run a fancy bead because I would be afraid of the heat pulling the tube out of square to the right. Square it up again. If it is not square, grind out your weld and try again. ----Now go to the left side of the tube and weld from tack to tack. --MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Now weld the front and back of your tube and you are done. ----If I had not been told to weld all the way around the bottom of the tube, I would have tacked both sides squaring up the tube as I worked and after finished tacking, I would have only welded about 25mm from each tacked corner. That would be plenty strong enough based on my extremely limited experience. ----I do not know what your birth language is but…. if it is Lithuanian or Russian, I would be happy to retype my reply to you in one of those languages.Adding something.... It took a long time adding photos. I did not see the reply from ttoks when I posted. It would be my suggestion that you do as he instructed. I am an entry level hobbyist welder.... I weld for fun. If I had to weld for a living I would starve to death. Much better to take their advice than mine. docwelder, Bisteneau, and ttoks are the 99.9% I mentioned before.Last edited by Equilibrium; 10-07-2014 at 06:11 AM.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:1240mmx100mmx8mmthis is the box section dimensionsplate is 600 mm X 600 mm x16mmI use inch and mm and although sometimes I confuse myself doing this I tend to do what comes naturally for me and this is why you got both in opregards slob.
Reply:Although I think code may allow smaller, in the case of no size, logic would be weld no smaller than the thickness of the thinner member. That would be the 8mm member like ttoks mentioned.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Equilibrium went as far as to guide you in setup too ! Very impressive and nice details shown too. Just weld it up like was mentioned. I don't think there will be too much warping
Reply:oK 8mm leg length it is.Thanks to All for the replies it's appreciated slob.
