So I have made several of these square fire pits, and I gotta say they are a great design. But no my design. So I want to make something for my son and his GF, they have a place with a yard now. I want they same bowl, but in a triangle. I have some leftover tread plate and I think outside, the three leg design will work for them. For the square bowl, it's a 4-1 cut to make the bowl sides, but what would it be for the triangle?I'm have brain farts and I about to go start cutting up cardboard to figure it out. Thanks Tim Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:If I understand you correctly, you want to stay with trapezoids for the sides, but only use three? To google it, the term is "frustum of a right triangular pyramid" since there will be a hole in the bottom.(like this pic, but turned over) Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 10-12-2014 at 10:01 AM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Well yes, I am not doing the expanded steel on the bottom I'm just using tread plate and it would be a more flattened bowl. I don't know why I can't get my head around this. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:The mesh makes for a good pit for burning smaller dried yard waste but most folks I know around south Florida have a patio. So hot embers falling out the bottom is not good. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:You are aware that making this in a triangle is going to leave you with sharper corners than the square one has, right? If I were you I would be moving towards something with more sides since it is going to someone who may be having my grandchildren someday. Just a thought. GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:You want a fairly flat triangle shape . So get some card board , a sharpie ,straight edge, and box cutter lay out some triangles with a base  24" height 8" . increasing the height will deepen the pit .Rounding the cornors of the base will soften the sharp points. There may be a mathematical formula  but I was a sleep that day in school.gxbxc

Reply:This will do it, all you need is the inclined angle of a plate.  http://jansson.us/jcompound.html
