Guy brought me a log splitter he bought cheap. It is a farm built unit that has a hydraulic pump that runs off a tractor PTO. The ram tube is around 5" diameter. Not sure how much tonnage this thing pushes. So anyhow the guy already cut off the existing wedge and wanted me to build a new one and install it at 24" from the push plate instead of the 18" it was at before. Also clean up and fix the push plate which was quite a mess! Apparently when there are no wrenches around to tighten the "gib" bolts the welder is obviously the next best choice... Have to cut out that mess and make up new "gibs" and whatnot. But anyhow my on to my main question. The bed of the splitter is an I beam that consists of 1/2" steel. I don't know what was on it for a wedge before but I picked up some 1/2" plate and cut out some pieces on the plasma table to put together a wedge. After a couple hours of welding and grinding I have a wedge. I V'ed out the bottom portion of the wedge and went at welding it to the base of the splitter which brings me to my question. I put in 7 passes of weld all around the wedge (both sides) which makes about 1.5" wide base weld (1/2" on either side of the wedge plus the 1/2" of the wedge base itself). Now really because of the thickness of the base (I beam) itself I feel this should be enough but what do you guys think? I'll get pics today and post later this evening when I come in from the shop again. If I knew how much the ram pushes I wouldn't worry as much.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:If you weren't a regular, I'd rate this as a troll thread. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you are serious. The problem is the heavy base metal sucks out too much heat many times with these small welders. If the root welds don't fuse well with the base material, all the welds in the world on top won't help. The welds will fail due to lack of fusion where the base metal and welds meet. Some preheat can help, but there is simply no substitution for horse power..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:110 Mig?You're funny....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:you'd be better off with your 12v batteries and jumper cables, at least there you can get some heat.

Reply:What are you too lazy to drag a real welder out to the farm? Consequently, I can't say I've ever really thought about owning a small 120V welder until this week. Quick little 16 gauge sheet metal job... would have saved a bunch of time compared to dragging out the trailblazer.Last edited by forhire; 10-09-2014 at 11:21 AM.

Reply:When I welded together my 1/4 inch closed root, 3/8 inch thick test plate. I think it took 9 passes, preheated with a propane torch for the first pass or 2.You can get plenty of heat with a 110v mig and a propane torch.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Post the pics and wear a flame suit and a cup lol. Im sure you are kidding. And the flame will definately not be from a propane torch.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I think you guys took the bait.My guess is he is just playing around with the title, as he mentioned nothing about 110 in the post, only the title. At least, I hope.
Reply:If there is room behind the wedge, consider a gusset from top of wedge down to the beam.
Reply:A 5" cylinder has 19.6 square inches of cross section. My PTO pump for example is bypass set at 2000 Lb per sq inch. 19.635 X 2000 = 39,270 pounds pressure. Where will you be standing when it breaks?
Reply:Willie B has a good point. That's a lot of pressure. How much pressure can a log withstand before it splits? Does the ram ever come into direct contact with the wedge?Dan

Reply:After you rebuild with a thicker top plate, and maybe extend the length of your slide portion of the push piece, fasten everything with Gorilla Glue. You need to make the push face non slip. I've been hit in the nose when a smaller than that splitter spit out a block. My nose was mostly ripped off from the top down, and I had six cracks in my skull. That hurt. Two surgeries later, it still doesn't flow air so good.
