Hey guys,Im on a budget and I already have a table with a nice 3/4" hardwood top.I do extremely light weight work (car intakes and exhaust systems) and there will be no hammering on the table, that is not what I do.being that I weld almost all stainless and aluminum I am thinking that I can get by with adding a 1/16" sheet of aluminum to the existing wood top.  That way it doesnt need oiling like steel and would already be aluminum so it wouldnt contaminate my stainless welds. What are your thoughts on this?Cheers,Matt
Reply:I don't know about anybody else, but that is pretty thin.  I've used thin aluminum occasional as a buffer.  Don't forget you have to ground either the table top or the work.  I had an issue where there was a weak contact at the aluminum work surface.  Created a large flash 'burn' in the aluminum, warped it in the local area. I think you are going to want something more solid.  Steel should work for you.   And unless its stored outside I wouldn't oil steel.  Store it clean and dry.  If I really feel the need add a coat of Johnson's paste wax.  (Woodworker's trick for tablesaw top...) You may also want to search out previous threads.  I think some folks have had concerns about excessive heat on the wood underneath a steel worktop. How about a sheet of copper?  I've got a piece on my table I think its 1/16" x 12 x 18"  I think it cost around $30 or so.  Pretty solid, good grounds everywhere.
Reply:Thanks.right now i have a 30x8x7/16 peice of aluminum on my wood bench that Im working on but having the whole table grounded would be nice.I dont think grounding with aluminum will be a problem?
Reply:I read on a previous thread here on WW that if you are working with stainless, you can't use regular carbon steel as your work surface because it contaminates the work pieces. The poster there said they use aluminum, but I don't know how thick. Heat-resistant fiberboard was also suggested.
