After seeing how handy a 2x72 grinder would be, I started rounding up parts and decided on a design.  I'm not trying to re-invent anything here, but blending ideas from a lot of other models from this website and the many you can find on YouTube.   When looking at my very limited steel inventory, I found my father-in-laws old Class 4 (10,000 lbs) hitch receiver.   I figure that will be strong enough to hold the sanding arm.Only parts that I have yet are some idlers that I purchased on Ebay. This is my plan for the basic layout.I want a unit that I can move around easily in the shop, so I'm putting together a rolling stand for it.    I'm expecting more parts to show up by UPS soon, but with my other work, this project could take a couple months.   If anyone has a 8" or 10" contact wheel they'd like to sell, I'd be interested.P.S. This isn't my first belt sander build, as I made a 6" x 147" stroke sander for my woodworking business about 30 years ago, and still use it almost daily.JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180

Reply:I would recomend puting some rubber bumpers on the base to help it from walking while running. I will be putting some on mine soon.Nice design, keep us posted.
Reply:some people have had success with roller skate wheels & bearings.  But, I don't think there are 10" roller skate wheels available anywhere.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I received a couple deliveries of parts lately and I'm on the way toward assembly of the 2" x 72" grinder.  Received bearings and 4" drive wheel from Beaumount Metal Works, 4 step pulleys and other items from Amazon, 10" contact wheel from Grizzly, etc.   Picked up a piece of 1/2" aluminum this afternoon and made the part that holds the flat patten head.  It turned out pretty good considering I made it in my woodworking shop. Will check back in when I get anything else completed on the project.JackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:I'm back from vacation and spent a lot of the day on the grinder project.  I welded up the mount for the 10" Grizzly contact wheel, welded on the drive wheel assembly and started to build the tracking wheel arm.  The main projects left are to build a swinging motor mount and to align everything before firing it up for the first time.  Also need to build the platen and grinding table, along with a lot of other details.  Here are a few photo that I took tonight.Tracking wheel assembly.First test fit with all wheels in place.Contact wheel mounting method.Test fit with normal sander mount.Rear view.JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:Looks great!  This is exactly the sort of sander I'd like to build.Do you have the stock number on the Grizzy contact wheel?KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:I purchased it through Amazon, but it shipped from Grizzly.   The page doesn't show a photo of the wheel, but this is where I ordered it.  http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G9242-...ef=pd_sxp_f_ptJackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180

Reply:Super cool. I have too many projects in the queue already, but want one of these...bigtime. How does one keep the belt from running off the wheels? It seems like even on a manufactured model that this could be an issue. Also, I was reading up on those Burr King belt sanders....they allow for slack so you can "bend" the belt around surfaces...would it be possible to do that on one of these?
Reply:Kevin - There is a link after my text in the first reply.  The forum shortened to the little icon and word Amazon.  I'll try it again here (or just do a search for it at Amazon or Google.  http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G9242-...dp/B0000DCZX1/Steve - Tracking works pretty easy for most of these tools.  One of the wheels is crowned, which makes the belt track nicely.  Video coming shortly.JackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:It's ALIVE!!!  I worked on the grinder a few hours today and mounted the motor temporarily to see how it ran.  I still have lots of details to finish on it, but it sure seems that it's going to work great.  It's a 3450 rpm motor and I tried it on all but the fastest speed so far, all with success.  I ground the corners off of a piece of bar stock and it ate it away like butter!  I'm probably going to make a slide for a vertical motor mount, maybe with a foot pedal to raise it to change belt speeds. Here's a short video of the second time that it was turned on.  (slowest speed)JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:I finally got back to the Sander/Grinder project and have made good progress.  Painted the main structure last night and should have everything but the tool rest finished up tomorrow.  Here's a photo of the painted main frame.  (Ford tractor blue to match closely with Lincoln colors)More photos and videos tomorrow.JackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180

Reply:I have the sander/grinder pretty much finished up now!  Just have to paint the arm assembly for the contact wheel.  This is by far the most rewarding metalworking project that I've made, in the few months since I dove into the hobby.I'll start with an overall photo and a couple short videos.  I'll put up some more details and photos in follow-up post later. Reply:Motor mount and tracking arm photosThe 1 1/2 hp motor was previously on my Rockwell tablesaw.  I made a vertical sliding motor mount so when I step on the pedal, the motor will raise about 1" so I can easily change speeds on the belt pulleys.  Detail of motor mount. Reply:Great job Jim...how do you keep the motor mount stable during operation?
Reply:Since the motor only travels vertically, and it weights 40 lbs or so, gravity does all the work.  I could easily add a spring to assist the downward travel if needed, but I don't think I'll have to.JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180

Reply:I'm inspired, you do very nice work!  I was looking at making one of these in the near future and you've provided some great ideas.

Reply:I've had this sander finished for a couple months now and I can't imagine ever working without it!   Haven't had to make any adjustments or fine tuning at all.  I'm very, very happy with it!JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180

Reply:Jack, very nice job, well done!  Did you lay this project out on paper first or was this done in your head and made up on the fly?  Great job!  Best  Bob
Reply:Very nice
Reply:2x72 grinders are so incredibly useful you wonder how you ever did any work before you got or built one.  That's a very nice build and saved you a thousand or two off the price of buying one someone else built.   Great job.
