Hi folks, I have a question, I'm 21,  no experience in welding but I'm starting to get interested in it, I'm thinking of maybe doing a apprenticeship but I'm pretty paranoid about the health effects so I'm wondering if you wear all personal protective equipment when welding is there still risk of lung, eye & skin disease?and does gear like 3M Speedglas 9002X with Adflo filter fully protects you? Thanks! My bad this thread should of probably been in Safety section.Last edited by Blunt420; 10-20-2014 at 01:57 AM.
Reply:Why would you be worried about welding fumes if you smoke blunts ? Welding fumes will get you pretty high especially galvanized

Reply:Well maybe cause weed isn't as toxic? lolI would appreciate a real answer tho & to the other dude no I'm not a troll.
Reply:With most jobs where you get your hands dirty there is an element of danger.  If you use the safety equipment provided on the job the danger is pretty well eliminated.  If welders were dropping like flies then you would hear about lawsuits and workmen's compensation claims on the news.  The welders who make the news usually are killing themselves by welding on fuel tanks.   I encountered two Ironworker union recruiters a few years ago.  Yes they needed welders who wanted to start an Ironworker apprenticeship.  The comment made to me was that they first went to metropolitan high schools on career days.  They could see no interest at all as the students checked out their smart phones.  These recruiters gave up and moved into rural areas.  They figured they would have a better chance talking to young people who regularly worked on family farms and knew what wet, cold and dirty meant.   Just walking into a cow barn I am sure exceeds all kinds of air quality limits, safety standards, and rules.
Reply:Don't forget your hearing. I have ringing in my left ear nearly all the time now.As far as the hood and powered filter, I would start with a passive hood and 3m P100mask. Work your way into an autodark and powered filter. I have a Racal system under my desk. It has been there for 15 years. Have no clue if it works, but I can tell you the screw on filters are not made any more.I discovered early on that I hate stick, so I don't do it anymore. The bulk of burns, hacking cough, and crap in my ears was from stick.Last edited by shovelon; 10-20-2014 at 11:06 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
