ok so here is some of my pics from tonights welding practice using 3/16th" square tubing for the material with .035 steel solid core wire, 26.4v and 575ipm wirespeed. I want to hear all the good and the bad opinions including those that will help me make the welds better. Attached Images
Reply:Your travel speed is too fast. When you see the V shaped "dimes" that's a good indication you need to slow down.Your voltage and wire speed seems high for 3/16" as well. My chart lists 18.5v, wire speed 265 using .035 wire and 75/25 gas as a starting point for 3/16"..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:ok so V = slow down. thats a tip that the journeymen at work didnt give me, as for voltage and wire speed, they run their beads extra hot and extra fast... nothing like industrial manufacturing to screw up everything you thought you knew.
Reply:Production welding is a bit different on average. They often want to run hot and fast to reduce labor costs. In many cases it's at the expense of looks or strength. That  doesn't mean it's wrong, only that  "normal" settings and so on don't always apply. Many times you don't need max strength to get the job done.On something this thin, you may have no choice but to run that fast to avoid burn thru.Your consistency could use a bit of work. It's visible in many of the shots. My guess is you are doing timing patterns rather than actually watching the puddle and reacting to it. At higher travel speed it's not unusual for guys to get a bit "flustered" and mess up the pattern occasionally..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:x2 to DSWTurn it down and work the puddle. get consistent, then speed up.Leo
Reply:the consistancy is a defo worker, some of my issue in them was that my nozzle was getting stuck here and there or otherwise shifted my body in some which way or another... as for timing patterns, I am not entirely sure what you mean but the technique that is used in the shop is to move forward ahead of the puddle and pause while the puddle catches up and then repeat the action untill the bead is laid down from start to finish.
Reply:As far as "timing patterns" many guys will do a 1...2...3...4 sort of  rhythm as they do a motion, usually circles or C / Z patterns.  I've seen a "whip and pause" pattern occasionally used with mig as well that is sort of like what you describe. Your "jump forward and pause" motion would also possibly explain the V shape to the bead as well.Having the nozzle stick is often a sign the inside is getting caked up with spatter, or the nozzle is leaning against the tip because the nozzle is worn out. I'm not a big fan of riding the nozzle against the plate, but it does happen once in a while. I prefer to teach guys to "carry" the gun rather than simply jam the nozzle against the work and rid the plate. I think it teaches guys to be lazy and doesn't get them to develop the skills needed to really weld..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Yeah, in general, pointy-shaped beads indicate too much speed.-RuarkLincoln 3200HDHobart Stickmate LX235TWECO Fabricator 211i
Reply:What gas are you using?  With 26 volts you are at the beginning of spray.  Your fourth picture looks more like what a weld in spray should look like.  Have you tried 27 to 28 volts??  If you can go into spray welding is very fast.  With your wire feed speed is nice and high.  Stickout should be over 1/2 inch... more like 5/8 or 3/4 on small wire.

Reply:@lotechman, I dont remember exactly cause the gas is hardwired into the building but I think its c-25 or blueshield 8 not sure if they are the same or not.... the fourth pic was a slightly odd weld for me, if you refer to the pic with the 7 in it, you will find that the 4th pic is of the weld on the right hand side of the "pillar" the slight angle (~50 degree) required more stickout @shovelon, all of the welds pictured are pushing, apparently I didn't post the picture of of the weld using the pull direction I guess I was just too lazy to post the last few pictures from the other day.
Reply:For general info.  In order to go into spray ( around 26 to 30 volts) you need a shielding gas with 20 % carbon dioxide or less.  A C25 gas will not support spray.  Things change significantly depending on the gas you are using.
