I've been a pipe welder for a few years now 6010 root 7018 out kind of deal. Anyways I'm trying to pick up new skills so I picked up some sch 10 8" stainless to practice on. My problem is it is burning the stainless. I'm using an 1/16" tungsten on 85 amps with about 15 cfh of straight argon. Cup size is a standard 8. I don't think I am moving to slow because I tried going along just making tight circles without any filler moving about as fast as I could with the metal still melting and I got the same thing. For those that may not know sch 10 8" is about 1/8" thick. I don't know if lower amperage would do the trick or if a bigger gas lenses will work. Purging is out of the question, I'm not going to use that much argon practicing. I just would like some input from experienced tig hands whether you do pipe or not. Thanks in advance.
Reply:Forgot to mention in case anybody wonders it is 304. I'm not gaping it just slamming it and burning. I'm cleaning it and the discoloration is in the haz.

Reply:We had some schedule 10 304 last week. I got pics of a six inch and an eight inch. The argon had to be blasting on max, #12 cup with tungsten sticking out an inch and a quarter.
Reply:sch 10 is tough In any size.on 8" I would be running 3/32" tung and about 90 amps, 20cfh if no wind, and fast. I still don't have a big lens so I run a #8 on a medium lens. since you are just butting tight, put a quick "root" in with no filler, and see what happens. I bet you end up with a nice rainbow if not strait gold.if you do, that tells you that you have trouble adding filler. at 90 amps, and a sharp tungsten, you should be able to lay 3/32 or even 1/8" if you careful and still have nice color.nice tight arc, and if your walking the cup, roll that puppy as big as you can to keep travel speed upbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin |
