I found a box of mismatched rods. Some are marked some are not. The  rods in the picture look to be in good shape. but the black/dark gray rod has nothing on it to identify it.Are these any good? What are they intended for? Reply:Yep supermissile is the bees knees for cast. That black rod looks like some old gouging rods I had years ago. Set the machine up on AC and crank it to 200 amps or so and see what she does. The ones I had, if on AC they'd gouge out pretty darn good. Put em on DC and it would lay down a bead almost and inch wide haha

Reply:Super missleweld is made by harris and is awesome for all kinds of stuff except grinding away and torching off. Works great welding unknown stuff. Like springs, bucket cutting edges, ag tillage parts. Here it is according to harris. The ultimate electrode for welding steels with highest strength and maximum ductility (AC/DC) Assures non-cracking welds on “problem” steels such as high carbon steels; tool steels; stainless steels; spring steels; manganese steels; and dissimilar steels. Super Missileweld is particularly advantageous when the alloy content of the steel to be welded is known. This unique electrode is so versatile that its applications are virtually too multiple in number to specify. For years, it has been a maintenance and repair “stand-by” in every industry throughout the world.- See more at: http://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/e....WJHDaPP0.dpufThe black rod could be nickel rod too Try running some and let us know the resultsLincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.
Reply:Yikes! Super missileweld is $25-$35 per pound??Edit: never mind, looks like so is nickel 99Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:One time I was working on building a cofferdam. 135-feet by 135-feet with 60-feet long sheets. We would drive all day and I would stay late into the night running one Super Missileweld rod after another repairing one of these. $$$$$$$$ Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:CEP, I don't know why you guys wasted your time with that silly automatic thing, just grab the sledge and get after it!!!!!! Hope you know I'm funnin YA! Regards, AllanPS. as to the rods: I've used the super missile weld too, great stuff. As to the black rod, I believe that Dave is probably right, cast iron rod.aevald
Reply:I'm with Dave ,nickle rod. I have seen 55 and 99 nickle, black colard like that.
Reply:Years ago a bone head at Airgas sold me nickel rods to fill worn holes in a joystick mechanism of cast iron with the intent to re drill. The stuff shattered drill bits one after another. His concern was that the nickel would be too soft to wear well.
Reply:Yeah Willie, he probably didn't look at the fine print on that rod.... the part where it specifies machinable or non-machinable. Oddly enough, Eutectic makes a rod that applies like brass and is as hard as a file. My welding instructor, when I was in school, was asked by the machine shop instructor to repair a gear for one of the lathes, he used some of the Eutectic rod because the "salesman" said it would be ideal. They had to trash the gear and make a new one. Best regards, AllanLast edited by aevald; 10-28-2014 at 11:34 PM.aevald

Reply:When I worked in the brewery we used eutectic rods on the scrap paper baler to hard surface the bottom plates to stop the glass from wearing them out.Measure with a micrometre, mark with chalk,  cut with a torch.Never force anything...just get a bigger hammer.RoyOld Airco buzz box approx 1974Lincoln mig pack 15Lincoln 175 square wave1954 9" south bend lathe
Reply:I've used both 55 and 99 nickel rods. Been a long time but I thought(?) one of them was "machinable"? I never drilled a hole though any nickel repairs, only used a grinder on the weld beads.
