I just learned how to weld a few weeks ago in a shop at school. I'm interested in doing some precision welding and possibly getting a welder of my own. I'd be doing mostly smaller welds, maybe down to rods as small as 1/8" and I cant have these big globs of weld on there for models. Any suggestions on what kind of welder would be good for this kind of work (and not too expensive)? Thanks
Reply:You could try a simple DC stick welder. Check around for used machines, someone scored a Hobart Stick Welder that had bad shipping damage for $140 untested but it fired right up.
Reply:Campbell Hausfeld Rebuilt 115 Volt Stick Welderfor $65 - good deal or no?
Reply:If it works, don't see how you can go rong.  Get better, buy bigger.   JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Rookie, It takes money to make money. Borrow money to buy a Lincoln arc welder with AC/DC poles, either portable or shop,230V preferably. ask your LWS store to show you a manual TIG torch setup; Torch, power cable and  adapter, hose, argon bottle, and reg. Invest in an Oxyfuel torch set, for welding, brazing and cutting. with that and a grinder you should be able to start your precision welding without too much spending.
