I have seen these as gussets on rollcages and such but I dont know what they are made out of... Anyone know? It looks like some round tube and some flat plat but I assume its all one piece.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:If it's one piece it's stamped and pressed.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:Fordman, it's just flat plare, cut and pressed like Olddad said. You can make one if you need one with some heat, and a tube to form the plate around. It won't be as pretty, but it can be done. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:You'll need a dimple die for the holes.Millermatic Passport PlusMillermatic 200Millermatic 350P with PythonXMT 304 /w S-64 feeder and 12RCDynasty 300 DXVictor O/APremier Power Welder for my trail junk.
Reply:cut the plate and make the dimples first, then heat around whatever size tubing and bend it around. Thats my guess anyways.
Reply:Hmm it sounds like alot more work than I thought, althougfht they look really nice and are way more functional than traditional gussets! I have thie dimple dies.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:Most likely that is done in a press, possibly progressive die if enough volume warrants it.I'm not sure where you are from, but if you want to see how such parts are formed in a real factory take a tour of the Harley Davidson plant in York PA. Their tour takes you right by some rather huge presses stamping out all sorts of things. They also have massive presses deep drawing fenders. One of the best factory tours I've ever been on.Dave
Reply:Yeah they cost 20 bucks a piece though...HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:Seams like you could do just as well with some pipe and plate.
Reply:Yeah I could do that pretty easily, just dont know how it would turn out. It would probly look good too...HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:that is a cool guesset, but I would be really worried about the dimples not being sleeved. the interior would rust out fairly quick if it is an outside type deal. frames/carts/anything autmotive....
Reply:it's probably mass-produced with a large press and die... as far as a do-it-yourselfer, cut the pattern, punch out the holes, dimple-die them, then bend it over a DOM/Sch 40 tube with a torch. that'd probably be the simplest/quickest way. if you wanted to cold-form it, you COULD make a die and press it in a 50-ton shop-press.Later,Andy |
