I have a job where the customer wants a sign with the background all engine turned or jeweled. Whatever the proper term is. I don't have a good way to do this myself or a good consistent way to do it. Does anyone sell sheets of this already done up? I need 2 sheets that are 2'x2' in either thin steel or aluminum. Prefer thin steel like 14 or 16g.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I've never seen it for sale. Put a 2" roloc sanding disc in your drill press after marking a grid on the sheet. It takes a meticulous person but very doable.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Well do it freehand ,air die grinder would be easiest , and I would use aluminum instead of steel, It jewels faster. Try different grits of wheel until you get what you like and it is overlapped about 1/2 the dia +or - on each step (so for a 2" dia roloc you only have 1"showing) You have a c&c so maybe you can adapt that some way some one with a C&C router could knock it out in no timeLast edited by gxbxc; 10-31-2014 at 11:59 PM.

Reply:Engine valve lapping compound works great on aluminum sheet.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:I have done it with a disc of Scotchbrite (size and grade to suit the job) glued to a homemade holder in the drillpress, Works great but mark out first with pencil ect to get the spacing right.Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.

Reply:Eastwood sells a lot of products for auto restoration. One of their products is a rubber wheel to go in a drill press. If I remember correctly, it has diamond dust impregnated in the rubber. They advertise it for replicating the dash panels in the old muscle cars. Might be worth checking out. As for the steel, or aluminum choice-aluminum is the way to go. The steel would have to be highly polished to make the engine turning show. Then you would have to apply a sealer to prevent rust. Then it would have to be regularly maintained. Hope this helps. Good luck! |
