I knew it was just a matter of time..When I built my dock frame years ago I used lalycolumns going thru a bored piece of tube welded to the side of the frame so I could adjust it when the water level got too hi or too low..Easy enough..Drag the dock in the water..Jack it up..Put in the columns and bolt them where needed...Reverse order in the fall and take the dock out.Was OK for a few years but for a one man operation getting it in and out of the water for summer/winter...Well it's way too heavy the way it is.The columns rusted to the tube and after that there was no getting them apart so I just left it all in the water and let the ice do it's damage..This is how it looks right now..So yesterday we had the day off so I went to the shop with a plan in my head and in 3 hrs this is what I came up with..I made it so I can adjust the height when the water level gets a little higher in the summer months..The new dam on the other side of the lake keeps the water level on my "Beach" between 18" and 24" so all I need is my jack to put the height where I want it..Note the 2 places where the stainless tube goes..All I need to do is drill and bolt it where it needs to be on both sides...Is it my "Best Work"?Hell no.Is it going to be useful?Hell yes!My boss showed me some aluminum I could take for free so that's all I had to work with..But with 3 hrs total time involved and nothing on paper..it came together rather fast..And for something that will be underwater all the time who cares!Don't worry if you think it's not sturdy enough..We don't have crashing waves or anything like that here..Nice and quiet and most days the water looks like a mirror anyway..But in the mean time I have to let the water warm up a bit before I go in and pull the 'ol remove and replace..Now I have 3 yards of mulch to spread around..I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I just took you lake tour cruise again, Zap. I was surprised that it was back in '08 when it was posted. I would love to live on a lake like that. I would spend all my spare time with a rod and reel.I just thought it was dry when I replied to that post. It's official now that we are the driest area in the US now. Been all over the news for the last week.

Reply:I design and build huge marinas.  What you made looks great, depending on water fluctuation. For do it yourselfers MERCO Marine sells corners, pipe leg holders etc.   My designs have to handle 80' of seasonal water flucuation, so they are freefloating with anchors that have to be lifted and moved weekly. My largest marina has 6-2 ton anchors and shore chains.  Weekly it has to be moved by lifting all the anchors (thats usually a sign to God to start a wind storm) floating the marina into it's new position and dropping anchors, leaving a couple feet of slack for chains. Docks have to be flexible or ridgid, it is like designing buildings that are under a constant earthquake load.  All my newer designs are flexible, however Most designers go ridgid. I have made several using small designs similar to yours. They seem to work well. One, the legs have pads for feet.  The other, downward pressure was put on pilings while a water pump "dug" out the silt as the piling went down. Once you stopped water flow, the mud settled in like concrete. It also seemed to stay put. A third design I have floats but has 2 legs at the shore end for holding it in place.  Those have to be cranked up while the docks are moved, then cranked back down when its into position.

Reply:I am officially jealous as hell. I have to drive 15-20 minuets to get to my favorite bass fishing hole. Then if it has been raining  better have a 4x4 with mud tires. You just walk out your backdoor. Beautiful place man, If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:If you ever have to adjust the dock, we use a barrel full of water and position it under the structure.  When you start filling it with air it will act like a jack to lift it.  Each one will lift around 400 Lbs. Makes it easy to lower or raise those adjustable legs..

Reply:Even working and living at a lake, I still can't find time to fish!!!  I'm doing something wrong.  Although when I am working scuba under the marinas I have laminated notes I hook on lines that say things like "We don't like power bait, send down a six pack"  or "Single white male bass wishes to meet female Vegan".  Problem is, it's hard not to drown laughing when you 60' deep!  I have made a couple ,way too serious" fishermen mad, but overall it's funny.    The hyd jack is a fine idea if your deepth is shallow enough.  I assumed it was deeper.  Where is that lake?  Gorgeus place to live though!Last edited by blackbart; 05-06-2013 at 03:04 PM.

Reply:By the end of this month I'll have spread 2.5 yards of garden mix, 8 yards of medium fir mulch, 7 yrds of top soil and 12 yrds of 3/4"- gravel by hand. we used the excavator for the 100 yrds of fill dirt that were brought in. I've already build a 12'x10' green house off the back side of my shop. Put in a 10'x20' parking pad in front of the big shop door, painted the 3 main living areas in the house. will be adding some latice under the deck to keep toys out, bringing in a couple thousand lbs of river rock, planting some grass, and some Rhodies, staining the deck, painting my shop, and then once I've got all that done I get to start working on the metal projects I've got planned for this year. two of which I can already see being put off until next summer... Luckily I've had some help with the above listed items but the majority of this work has been done by hand with minimal assistance and 90% of it was done in April. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Today the water was just fine so phase 2 of dock rebuild got underway..I figured the easiest way to get it out of the water was to just take it apart..So I flipped it over in the water and with the help of a battery powered drill took all the straps that were holding the wood to the frame out and now I can let the wood dry out on the shore..Frame..Wood..Got the rake out and cleaned all the leaves and other assorted trash out of the water so now I have a nice sand base again..Got the stand approx where it's going to be to check for levelness..Looks OK to me..But I am going to take the tube back to the shop tomorrow and make some bungs with a 3/8-16 thread in them and weld them into the ends because I know it will be much stronger than my first plan of just drilling and bolting them straight down on the tube holders..Should be easy enough to drill out the sides of the frame for bolts..I am also going to make some better "straps" to hold the wood to the frame..That's about it for now..Next weekend it should be all set for use..GO BRUINS!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
