Hey guys. I bought myself a maxstar 140 from a pawn shop yesterday. For $450 i got the machine and the leads to stick weld. I hooked it up and it welds great! I think it is a good buy for me because of how portable it is, i know i will get my money back out of it. I am in tech school learning welding and just finished my first semester of stick. I have NEVER tig welded before just watched lots of videos of it but I do want to have the ability to tig with my machine, especially since I will be starting class in two weeks. Basically my question is, what do i need to start piecing my tig rig together? my buddy has an argon tank he has no use for, but other than that im clueless.

Reply:thanks for the link to the manual. I guess I was wondering how the tig torch hooks up. you plug it into the front of the machine but where does the gas come in? does it flow from the reg. to the torch? is that what you are meaning by a 2 piece cable? like I said NEVER messed with tig, but I'm trying to learn!
Reply:2 piece the gas flows through a separate hose. 1 piece the gas flows through the hose. Your machine doesn't have a built in solenoid so you have to hook up the hose from the torch directly to the tank. The valve in the torch will control when the gas is on or off. After that, all ya need is a hookup to the machine. apparently yours takes a 25mm dinse.NickESAB CaddyTig 2200iPowermax 45MM140 (Sold)

Reply:thanks for the clarification
Reply:Is it a Maxstar 140 or a Maxstar 140 STR?
Reply:machine says maxtsar 140. it has a switch on the front for stick or lift tig and thats it.
Reply:You can also clamp the stinger to the loop on a power block (Weldcraft pn:105Z57) that connects to your regulator hose on one end and tig torch on the other then you can use a 1-piece power cable. OR, you can use a small dinse (Weldcraft pn:QCS-6G) with a coupler to connect the regulator hose to the dinse gas input. I had my T/A hooked up this way for a while before I built my arc start switch. This is the way that I would go. It is a pretty cheap set up that is safer and has all solid connections unlike the one I mentioned previously.Using a single cable for gas/power is cheaper and less of a hassle in my opinion. We have one of these at our shop and it tig welds very nice, just like our 150STLs. Has lift start and very nice smooth arc.Just trying to give some other set up options, hope it helps.-Rob
Reply:I knew I could do the power block and all, just wasnt sure what all my machine was capable of doing it different. I probably will stay away from that. Im not sure what you mean exactly how you did it.
Reply:The power block set up with the electrode holder I referred to looks like this: Attached Images
Reply:just as an update. I got everything needed to tig! I went with a powerblock and I think it will work just fine. we have been doing scratch start tig in class, so i tried the machine tonight and it all worked flawlessly
