I have a Lincoln PM300 that has a Python lead on it set up to weld aluminum. I also have the original Lincoln lead stored in box. When I need to weld steel I will switch back to the Lincoln lead that came with the welder. I have a friend that is bringing his commercial fishing boat to me in the next week or so to weld up some aluminum decking.   I need to weld some steel right now and my question is ...Can I use the Python lead to weld steel ?  I would like to switch the wire out and get to welding rather than switching the leads back and forth. Thanks in advance.NetmanLincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argon
Reply:netman, its not a dumb question. The Python will weld steel fine, but the wear on the liner is 30' long and the wear on the drive rolls in the gun (unless you change them) and the spatter on the cup (even if you use a tip extender) all makes it 'expensive' to use the aluminum gun to run steel.I'd argue it was worth the time to swap back to the short LN-9/Tweco push only steel rig then swap back.  I do it all the time and while its a pain in the stern it saves the Python.Incidentally, if you're not using the insulated gun drive roll kit for aluminum wire, get in touch with MK-Products and find out how to get one, it smooths the wire feed in aluminum by stopping and arcing process that happens at uninsulated drive rolls in alum.Cheers,Kevin
Reply:Thanks guys. I will switch back and forth.  I appreciate your replys. NetmanLincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argon
