Goodmorning everyone!!So, I recently got a nice Christmas present from the good folks at Kimberly-Clark, they found my YouTube channel and sent me the new helmet that they've just launched!! I was really thrilled, and felt very honored that I, of all people, ended up with it.Its the Jackson Balder WH70 BH3.And it looks like something out of Star Wars, its a beautiful creation:I opened up the box, and checked it out. The first thing I noticed about this helmet is just how light it is... Feels like it weights about half of what my Jackson BOSS does, you can actually forget you're wearing it...It comes with the standard yet very nice Jackson 370 Headgear, and has three adjustable controls, the standard Shade, Sensitivity, and Delay... Which have large, thin-glove-friendly knobs inside the helmet...And the outer lens is curved. Its the first Jackson I've used that DOESNT use standard sized lenses, but on a positive note it DOES seem to deflect spatter better than a regular flat clear lens. I was worried about how much its going to cost to use this thing and all, but I found and ordered a whole pack of clears for $18 shipped from Cyberweld. Not bad, at all.But whats best about this helmet? Not the little things. I put it on and looked through the lens, and noticed that the optics are crystal clear, they're honestly as good as the glass fixed shade hoods I've used. But they're green... WTF? Jackson said they were blue.... No Helmet:Light Shade:[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Ahhhha, there we go. In the helmets light shade, the display is green, but as soon as it kicks on everything turns this beautiful blue color... I'd never used a "blue" helmet before, but man was it beautiful!! Its VERY easy on your eyes, and blue is my favorite color to begin with I got it setup with my camera:And got some footage showing off the color... And the clarity of this lens, which of course, is all in this video:So, overall I REALLY like this helmet. What DONT I like? Well...1) It never really turns off... Its solar powered, so its one of those deals where its always "ON". Honestly not a bad thing, but its completly different than what Im used too, I bet I'll get really comfortable with this setup. It means its idiotproof, never again will I pick up a helmet, forget to turn it on, and get flashed. Or my favorite, think you have it turned on but the "push" of the button didnt register because you're wearing gloves.2) There are only two arc sensors... Not a big deal for me, don't get me wrong, but I know some people demand more than that.3) For some reason, it reads 9-13 on the "SHADE" knob. It will go a "click" below that, and a "click" above it, too. I tried it plasma cutting last night, and it was awesome Okay, fine, I'm nitt-picking. I think this is a great helmet, its lightweight, has a beautiful color, crystal clear optics and idiotproof controls at the end of the day. I really like it so far. I'm sure it'll be in a LOT of videos to come, and once I have some real time in with it, I'll make a full review. Thanks for reading guys, I hope y'all have a great weekend [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Some well deserved recognition there bud! It's nice to see your hard work doesn't go un noticed. I just saw my brother this morning to finally exchange christmas gifts and I got a new hood as well. It was only about 15 minutes after watching your video this morning. How funny is that! The last time I did some welding work for my bro, he was asking me why I dont use my auto darks. I told him i'm just so used to working without them and all that blah blah blah and started talking about fixed shades. I told him I would like to get my hands on one of those old style leather ones that are all rivited together just because they look oldschool hardcore, not like a space helmet. Well he handed me a box this morning covered in duct tape so I could'nt see any pics on it, but I picked off the jackson website in tiny letters in a heartbeat. I was thinking, Another Auto Dark? He knows I have about seven already, and hardly use them. Well to my suprise I cut the box open and bam! It's not leather, but some sort of fibre type material. I have a new set of leathers for school, and an old set from high school. Wrangler denim or canvas shirts rule tho!! I like Jody, I really do. I think he's really cool...But with my continuing education, and the three major projects I have for next year, that guy's gonna get a run for his money, Yeeeeeeehaw!! Hey, thanks!!  I try!! Thanks DSW!! I put a LOT into these videos. Unboxing type videos are the shortest for me, I'd guess they take roughly 6 hours on average. I have to plan them out, get everything setup, shoot the footage, get it on my computer, edit it just the way I want it, render it, and post it. Lots of work, but I love doing it... It feels good when people notice Haha I hope so, I'd honestly always planned to be a weldor, but the way things are going right now I might be able to just do all this internet stuff in a couple years. Its great, and it helps people, which I really like. Thanks man Dang SouthPaw, if you're ever in Ohio, let me know
Reply:As someone new to welding, I have enjoyed your videos and have learned a great deal watching them. It show that we may still have a chance in this world with quality young man like you. Keep up the good work and you will be very successful in the future.
Reply:Congratulations on the gift from Jackson.  Their marketing department was very smart to put one in your hands, as I might not ever have heard of Jackson's new helmet if it weren't for your video. But I have heard of Balder Technology.   For the last few years, Esab has already had the same Balder technology auto darkening filter in their NEW TECH 6-13 XL ADC Plus helmet.. introduced back in 2010 in North America.  ADC stands for Angular Dependence Compensation... the only marketingspeak clue in common between the literature of Jackson and ESAB that indicates that Jackson did not introduce or innovate, but rather followed ESAB's lead in bringing the new crystal view blue to market. It is very interesting how Jackson (kimberly-clark) describes their version helmet in their literature, by stating that "this advanced auto darkening filter has earned the best Optical Classification, only achieved with BALDER* Technology."  At first glance, it implies that the Jackson helmet earned the best optical classification... but in actual fact, it is stating that the Balder ADF unit is what earned the best.  And this same Balder unit has been in the ESAB New-Tech for quite a while. What I haven't been able to determine is the viewing area of the Jackson...I've searched all through the Kimberly Clark professional jackson websites, reading all the pdfs I could find, and could not find a viewable area specification.  ESAB identifies their viewing area as 3.77" x 2.96".In the video, you brought up a point about the curved shape of the front lens, and the cost of replacements. The literature I was able to find talked about the smoke deflection properties of curved surfaces, so there might be a long term health advantage that outweighs the extra cost.  Both the Jackson WH70 and the ESAB New Tech have curved surfaces intended to deflect smoke.  I don't know the science of it, only that the manufacturer's stated that there was some scientific intent that went beyond looks.Respectfully,Charles Brown

Reply:A little more research...Balder, a Slovenian optics company established in 1997, made their own helmets, the "baddest" of which was the BH3... hence the double model name designation of the Jackson WH70 / BH3.  Balder's Angular Dependence Compensation cartridge was introduced in 2009 on Balder's own BH3 helmet (same helmet given to Lanse/Stretch/ChuckE2009).  Balder also made this ADC cartridge availabe to other helmet makers as an OEM.  A year later, in 2010, ESAB broke out their New Tech shell with the same ADC cartridge.Around the same time, Kimberly Clark... a supplier of paper towels in many restrooms, among other exploits, acquires Jackson.  Then Kimberly Clark acquired Balder.  With that most recent acquistion, the same Balder helmet is now sold under the "Jackson" brand.  The fact that the helmet is really ported directly over from Balder explains the complete absence of any mention of the BH3 on the Jackson Safety website.  It didn't come from Jackson.  The helmet is, however, shown on the KimberlyClark Professional website.  And, a lot more information is available on the Balder website, which is still up and running in Slovenia post KC acquisition.Whew... I must have been really curious about this helmet.  $400 is a lot to spend, and I bought my first and last auto darkening helmet 26 years ago.  It's weird, because back then, the only "research" that could be reasonably done is to look at what was on the local welding supplier's dusty shelves.  Now, with this "world wide web", we can find information about products all the way over in Slovenia, which wasn't even accessible to us back then, being behind the iron curtain with sovereignty subsumed under the communist regime of Yugoslavia.  Man, have times changed dramatically in the last 26 years.Respectfully,Charles Brown
Reply:Jackson/Balder also has a couple of less expensive helmets, nice looking helmets, i was thinking about buy one of these or the Fibre Metals if my tweco didnt work out..http://store.cyberweld.com/jabaauwehe.htmltackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Here in europe (I actually I live in Slovenia, my college is 5min of walking from balder company) balder is a well known brand, which was created by few scietists from Jozef Stefan institute. These helmets are in the class with the speedglass,optrel... ...but I still prefer speedglas, because it's more comfortable.
Reply:first off lanse let me say congratulations that is a fine helmet and im prety sure my wife will be blaming you when i go to buy one (mabey lol) i have used the same helmet for the last 12 or so years well not the same one the first one had a 9500 lb. concrete block droped on it but the hood i use is over your shoulder in the video hanging on the wall the blue one and the black one im a jackson man my self.....weldermike my dad has that helmet in a wide view without the flip up if i remember right he got it when i was about five so its 25years old his is a huntsman fibermetal hood i used it for a week or so after my first one got smashed and for a 25 year old (paper lol) hood it has held up really well it is starthing to crack at the corners of the lens opening but he still uses it when he welds wich is usually only about once a year when he finds out im doing something at the house he comes over burns a rod complains there is something wrong with my welder and goes home.....the man needs glasses he cant see the d^mn puddle any more lol
