Reply:Looks just like a Craftsman I used to have. Just AC stick Buzz Box, 200-250A maybe.BUT, it DOES NOT have "lots of copper" as the ad says. The transformer is heavy with Iron and wound with Aluminum (probably scrap for the $20 though...)
Reply:Nothing really special in my opinion - but I'll give you your $20 back if you send me the funny looking rod holder that is in the picture. It's for holding carbon arc rods for heating - always wanted to try it just for the heck of it. Free welder - how can you pass that up Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I thought I heard carbon arc was pretty tough on the welder. Is it a freebie because it's dead or dying?

Reply:Thanks Dave. I saw the funny looking leads / rod holders and had to ask to make sure I wasn't missing out on something. I won't be making an offer on that unit.
Reply:I would give $10. for the carbon rod holder."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:It probably works ok. There's not much that can go wrong with an AC Buzzbox.Looks as thought the rod holder(stinger) is there, kind of hidden under the leads. And part of the ground clamp is shown in the pic.As far as the leads having cracks, just tape them up and they'll do fine. The bonus is the twin carbon arc torch. They're not made any more and will bring a premium on eBay. Especially that one, since it looks like a rebadged Lincoln. It's a better carbon arc torch than the one I have, and I would snap that one up in a New York minute, if it were around here.

Reply:Originally Posted by Willie BI think I've got one. If I'm able to find it I'll send it to you. When I bought the wonderful new Twentieth Century 295 Amp 100% duty cycle welder in the early seventies I bought it as an accessory. It was sold as a replacement for acetylene, it would weld and braze with less contamination, better control, and virtually free fuel. Heliarc was reported to be virtual alchemy A highly trained weldor sat in a hermetically sealed booth devoid of air, used SCUBA gear to breath, and welded with magic, ball lightning. The carbon arc torch, best I can tell, is useless.
Reply:I was just thinking of a variation of the theme used as an igniter for a wood stove. In cold weather the stove burns pretty much constant. In fall / spring I start it ay least twice a day.
