K'kins is a trifle upset over a trivial matter  Technically she's right I guess.Anyhow, it's probably a good thing to show a little token of luv. This thing has been languishing in the back of the pickup for about 4 days.  I figure that maybe if I get on it, and put it in the ground, it might go a ways to thaw her out.Don't forget to soak these things after unwrapping, about an hour is good. While the thing is wetting its roots, I had time to dig the hole  I don't drag all this stuff out unless I ABSOLUTELY need itThe excavation................Nothing says LUV like hacking your way through 16" of old hardened dead tree rootsThis rose bush happens to be a climbing rose bush.  Our thought (prior to my little mistake) was that it would be a good way to hide some of the stumps around the house.  We cut quite a few cedar trees around the house after the wild fire last year. The welding part (remember that??) will be the trellis thingy. If this works out to her liking,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Only about maybe 4 more to go after thisWish me luck"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I have to have the 6' breaker bar out any time I want to dig in the soil imediately around my house. when it's wet, it soup. when it's dry it's concrete. It never gets wet enough unless I'm standing over it with a hose...I'm pretty much done with all the big projects on this property. We'll be moving eventually. My next house will come with the purchase of a medium to large tractor with many attachments for the PTO. on the list are a back hoe, auger, brushhog, trencher, and I'm sure I can come up with any number of contraptions to go on the front. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Sam, you're probably better off with some of the newer shrubby/bush landscape roses they have now.  Pretty bushy and quite disease resistant.  They may hide the stumps better and have more, though smaller, blooms. PM me if you need more info.  I do have a dusty old degree from Virginia Tech in horticulture, LOL. I gave up on landscaping after digging over 500 holes in the hard clay in the yard and fighting dry shade, clay subsoil and LOTS of deer for years."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I hear ya on the digging samm. Last summer when it was about 100* I bought a 14ft weeping willow with a 3ft root ball on it. That was my first mistake! Second mistake was digging the hole at about 3pm when the sun was the strongest! I picked a real soggy area far from the house where there's alot of springs pushing up and I would be able to see it from the kitchen. Oh this is gonna be beautiful when it gets bigger  First swing with a pick ax went in about 2inches before I hit rock, and fought me the whole way. I nearlly thought I was gonna have a stroke, but i'm too dumb to ever say uncle to anything  Everytime I drive past that tree on my tractor I look at it and say Fk you, and I aint kidding! Reply:Mike,It's not the tree's fault thats where YOU wanted it to be. Thats like blaming the house for being turned away from the scenic view. Reply:Gawd!  I HATE CEDARS!Mom planted them around the house for shrubbery and they kind of got away from her.  I had to cut them out eventually and damn near turned a tractor over trying to pull the stumps (4020 JD so it wasn't exactly a small CUT).  I finally went and bought a Horrible Fright saws all and a 12" ripping blade.  That made short work of cutting the roots so I could at least get the main stump out and leveled back over.  I figured I would destroy the saw (why I wasn't anxious to use my Milwaukee) but it did the job plus a bunch of other dirt jobs in the past several years.  Cheap $25 if you ask me.Samm planting rose bushes?  Can the sound of bells be far off?RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Best tool I have for planting shrubs is my little gas powered 6" post hole digger. Just drill all the holes you can inside the area to dig, then clean out w/ the shovel. And it will cut thru the smaller roots.                                                   MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
