I'm going to be moving from CO to CA in the near future. I will be transporting my BuildPro table in the back of an enclosed rental truck, and then it may sit in storage for a 2-6 months depending upon how long it takes to finish remodeling the house and workshop. When the table was newly delivered, it was covered in some oil-soaked brown paper, and the top was pristine once I removed it and cleaned that sticky substance off. I would like to prep the table the same way for the move to CA, keeping it corrosion free even while in storage.Does anyone know what that paper is called and/or what that sticky oil was that it was coated with? I emailed BuildPro over a week ago, no response.Thanks.
Reply:I believe that is rice paper. My name's not Jim....
Reply:pretty much any paper will absorb oil, so it doesn't really matter what paper you use, just get some brown wrapping paper, and soak it in oil and put over table.if I were you I would get a can of bloxide for $16 and just spray the thing. That is what I do wtih my welding table and it never rusts. It's about the only paintable primer you can put on a table and still conduct the grounding current well.
Reply:Google Cosmoline rust preventive.
Reply:http://www.cosmolinedirect.com/http://www.midwayusa.com/product/118...sal-gun-greaseThe first is most similar to what was on the table to begin with. The 2nd is also a very viable option. Your third and fourth options are what AluminumWelder said. If it was my table I would do one of his two suggestions. And I already own a tub of RIG.
Reply:I personally use T-9 Bosehield. Soaked it on all my wood and metal working stuff (table and band saw, planer, etc.) for winter storage in the NW. Put it on heavy and let it dry.  Good to go. I use WD-40 to remove it. Comes right off. Good stuff.
Reply:LuMaxThe meta-message is that you are moving from an Inter-Mountain 'dry region' - to a coastal 'higher humidity' region - and want to preserve the surfaces. This ain't the Manhattan Project . . . Wrap your treasures in 'plastic and duct tape' whilein storage - nothing nefarious will occur.Your real issue is combating coastal moisture whenyour tools are exposted in daily/prolonged use.Opus   .Last edited by OPUS FERRO; 11-07-2014 at 01:38 AM.Reason: Bonus for those that saw it  . . .
Reply:Big sheet of paper. PB blaster or WD-40 in a spray bottle and mist the paper till its moist. Then plastic wrap. PB'd a rotating assembly, threw it in a plastic bag, then in a tupperware and it sat for nearly 3 years with no ill effect when pulled. Tub sat outside in the elements for two of the three
Reply:Thanks guys.  Opus thanks for bringing that up.  I was thinking short term only;  getting my table out there and into my new shop without it turning orange or getting pitted. I plan to install an HVAC system in the shop, might have to add a dehumidifier.
Reply:You can also just wet it with WD-40 and forget about it.  Since inputs going to be stored "inside" and in Cali, it won't rust. I use WD40 on my table tops year round.  No problems.  I have one smaller table that I haven't touched in over a year.  I looked at it today in the corner of the garage.  Sprayed with WD40 last summer and still no rust.Last edited by SuperArc; 11-07-2014 at 02:10 AM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:I have used in the past a product called Rustlick , used to spray it on mills and lathes when ever we weren't using them . Right now I am using a product from Staibl (gas treatment) they sell an engine fogger just spray it on and cover with waxed paper(kitchen kind)
Reply:Here's my plan:  Clean the table with acetone, spray Fluid Film onto it, place thin craft paper (the non-acidic type used in poster framing) on top of it, then saturate the craft paper with more Fluid Film. Then the table will be wrapped in heavy plastic and a sheet of plywood with about 1/2" overlap on the edges will be placed on top. The table came with 4" stubby shipping feet, they will go back onto it for the move. The plywood will be held in place with metal band straps. My buddy is going to 'borrow' a strapper from work. This is pretty much how the table was shipped to me and it arrived in flawless condition.Agree?
Reply:overkill, but it will work.
Reply:I vote for T-9 Bosehield . I use it also when putting a vice or rotary table on my milling machine, I have a JD square tube bender i keep in a shed and the dies stay rust free just spray it up when you put things away
Reply:Here's how the table was delivered, the thin plywood was messed up, but the table was OK. I plan to use the same type of straps, but no bubble wrap. You can also see the stubby feet below it.
Reply:I found a thread on another forum where a guy tested several anti-corrosion products on pieces of bare steel left outside during the winter for several months. All pieces were prepped the same way. Below is a photo showing the results. Now I am at ease with my choice of Fluid Film. I would post a link to that forum, but I think that may not be allowed.

Reply:Go to your local sporting goods/gun store. They sell a product called MDL. It's mostly used for black powder firearms. It come in a spray can, and is super sticky. The MDL stands for "moisture displaces lubricant".  I have used it on my firearms for long term storage-it works great. It doesn't evaporate like WD-40. Hope this helps. Give it a try!
