Yesterday as a bit of a joke I showed my kids a little trick of putting a stick electrode in the end of the Tig torch with the 1/8" collet set, no cup and the gas turned off. To their amazement, it worked, though not well(straight polarity). Today I had more time, do I swapped leads and lit up again. At 200 peak amps, 60% peak and 30% background, it ran like a dream. I was able to push it straight uphill with NO sagging at all. I played the pedal a little to keep the amperage in check, but WOW was it cool! Tomorrow I think I'm going to look at my other machines to see if they will pulse too. I know it takes the simplicity out of good old stick welding, but I could see it working in the structural fieldTeach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:Hey!!!  With all the fancy wizz bang doodads on tig machines now, that lots of people can't figure out and then blame the machine settings instead of their piss poor tig skills.........Leave the simplicity of stick welding alone!!  ......Bad enough that there is arc force and hot start on fancy machines...... if you could see me, I'm currently doing the: grumpy old man, fist waving in the air, get off my front lawn, grumbling and muttering to myself...... Reply:Lol me too! That Hill is an anomaly for sure. The only one I know of that's uphill on both sides. Kinda like welding pipe I guessTeach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:I'm no fan of either party but I still think it's a cool idea! I hope there's folks from Miller and Lincoln watching this thread. I don't think Rapid Arc stick welding will work very well, though- the voltage is usually around 24V, too low to even strike an arc. Don't let that stop you from trying, though, we may both be pleasantly surprised.Hmmm, now that I think about it, my old 300GTSW has hot start in TIG as well as pulse. May have to give that a try...JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:I'm with you Dave! All those hi tech gadgets aren't any good if you don't know how to use them. I'm a firm believer in " put the pedal down and tell your hand to keep up"!There's just nothing like the feel of a transformer arc... It's sorta like a woman, if you know how to get her in a good mood than your in for a good day! If you don't have the skills to turn her on you ain't got what it takes to lay it down! But all those buttons make your welder look cool!Just joking around here guys! But I do love the reliability of simple tools.  1 tool for 1 job = specialty.... 1 tool for 15 jobs = optimistic. The only multi process tool I use on a regular basis is a HAMMER!Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!

Even my son (age 16) agrees  I started him on OA and then a Forney 225 AC and a Lincoln 225AC.Then tig aluminum on my old Airco Now I just have to get the manufacturers to listen...Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I'm supposed to be the resident crusty old p{ick around here who hates technology. I lit up like Christmas, and wanted to know more. I even experimented this morning to see if pulse would work on stick settings. It won't.
