I have heard people using off brand cheapy grinding disks and having them come apart on them and send chunks of them flying across the room. Was wonder if any has had this happen. And what are some of the better disks out their when it comes to life span and grinding ability. And this is for a 4.5" Milwaukee
Reply:Really, I have had good discs come apart, too. Especially cutting discs!! I just buy whatever is available. But, Norco grindwheels and Makita, Dewalt are pretty good. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:I have never had a disc fly apart unless it was dropped or otherwise abused.I use a LOT of flapper wheels and I purchase from Lehigh Abrasives.  Their discs are comparable to DeWalt in my opinion but they are $2 each!  The quality is comparable to a $5 wheel.  Check them out:http://www.lehighvalleyabrasives.com   - home of the 4.5" flapper wheel for $2 each.ScottHaul a bike without straps - visit  www.mxtras.com  to see how!
Reply:remember that a cutoff disc is a cutoff disc and not a grinding disc, when you grind with a cutoff it weakends the holding fibers and then they fly apart . you should always check your equipment before you start to grind for anything that could bose a problem. it hurts when you get hit with a pice of disc off from a 7 inch grinder ask me how i know?Life is tuff,so be sharp  lincoln sp 100  cutmaster101  miller bobcat  miller 250 mig  $thousands in snapon
Reply:I agree. Cutoff disks shouldn't be used for grinding. I walked into a friends shop while he was grinding the frame on his truck with a cutoff disk. Just as I got a clear view of what he was doing the disk shattered and hit my face shield. It stuck into my face shield and needless to say scared the s*$t out of me. From that day on I've never used anything less than a face shield and glasses when grindin/cutting.I've never seen one come apart when in good shape and used for it's intended purpose. That's not saying it couldn't happen though. My Photos on Flickr
Reply:Lucky you had a face sheild on wildcat!!! Ive had a 9 inch cut off wheel let go.  I check them now. When I realised what had happened all I could do was hold my leg and run to the office for first aid. Luckily it wasnt deep, and I didnt need stiches. Left a mad scar there for a few years though. Its amazing how much blood came out of my leg.
Reply:Knock on wood before I say this! While working in the Fab business for 40+ years I have never had or seen a grinding or cut-off disc come apart. With that said, I would assume if this is happening it would be from missuse or a damaged disc from dropping grinder on the floor. As for cut-off disc this would happen if the disc is binding and twisting in the work piece.Clarke 130EN C25Lincoln 225 AC Stick(1968)Smith O/A RigHF 4X6 Red BandsawBlack & Decker Pro Chopsaw16 Speed Drill PressSpeedglas XL HelmetHarbor Freight Stuff
