Sorry--can't post a photo due to non-disclosure stuff so I'll do my best to put it in words. We do some complicated fabrications in T304 SS with literally thousands of welds in all sorts of complex configurations to make the part. Mostly tiny welds. We'd like to come up with a better way of taking out the discoloration from welding. We sometimes use the old-school pickling paste but that's messy, expensive, and toxic. We've tried citric acid pickling but it's only ok...and the time involved for the "soak" slows throughput. Although the items could be put in a soak tank, that's really not a great solution because of space and time.In the magical world of unicorns and fairies, it'd be nice to have something that could be sprayed from a standard squirt bottle, only have to sit there an hour or so (or until dry) and then the part could simply be hosed off with the nasties going down the storm drain in the parking lot. This is one of those issues that's been bouncing around for years without a good solution so I thought I'd throw it out---hoping maybe someone had some new idea or had used a new product with good luck. Nothing critical, just fishing. Here's a non-descript photo where a 3/4" dia bushing is welded to the 16 gauge sheet....now multiply that by 1000+ on a single unit. We'd like to get rid of or reduce that kind of discoloration because the USDA can get uppity even though it's just cosmetic.

Reply:We use a unit made by Walter. It's the surfox 204 for heat tint removal. Works well if the material is pretty clean before you weld it. This system does require a neutralizing solution after cleaning but it is still a quick process. This unit is being used in a dairy processing environment. |
