here's my project thus far. it's two columns supporting two 3.5"x12"x24' glulam's canter-levered 12.5' on each side. A500 3x3x0.25 steel columns with A36 base plate and gussets. i tried 6013 stick but wasnt coming out nice, so i switched back to my MIG w/ 023 wire and had to make multiple passes. this weekend i am switching over to 035 wire. the footings are large underneath, approx 24" below grade and approx 24"x24" square, the top you see is 14"x14"x7" w/ about 4" above grade. all the welds are then wire wheeled and hit with a coating of etching primer. patio cover is 48'x14'Last edited by welding_kid; 05-31-2013 at 04:04 PM.

Reply:That's the way to do it Good load bearing footing with enough below grade to resist frost heave, and good provision for uplift (the bolts). Wish more people would build this way when adding to their homes."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
