Hey guys, I just got an Everlast 140st TIG machine to start out tig welding. Ive always used MIG and I have never used TIG. Which type and size tungsten should I start out with? This is a DC only,140 amps max, machine so I would only be welding mild steel and some stainless. I usually only weld smaller parts or jobs. Also, ive been told to start with ER70S-2 rod so, which size should I get (1/16'' or 3/32'')?
Reply:I tig weld ss 304L and 316L and i use 2% thoriated 3/32 i do alot of 12ga and 14 ga i use 1/16 filler rod 308L for both if this helps and i would use this same tungsten for the mild steel and yes that is a good filler rod to use the ER70S-2 and up
Reply:Your machine should be happy with the output it has for most sheet metal apps.....for stainless sheet metal I like 1/16 Tungsten using a gas lens and smaller filler rod ( .030 .035 ) with stainless I find the smaller the heat source and filler your reducing the chance of over cooking the weld.....larger fillers pull heat away from the parent metal and require you to step on the pedal harder to get things flowing...... Reply:140A DC is near the upper limit of most 1/16" alloyed tungstens. If you won't be doing all that much welding near the 140A maximum of the machine, I think 1/16" 2%Th or 2%La tungstens is all you'll need. IMO, start out with a 10-pack of 2%La, and if you find that for your welding needs it erodes the point too quickly or you get discolorations from overheating, then you can get a 10-pack of 3/32" tungstens.
Reply:I'm new to TIG welding myself, but from what I've read and what has worked so far for me is 1/16 for sheet metal (16g and thinner) and 3/32 for thicker material. I haven't welded anything thicker than 1/8 inch. |
