This Domino thing seems to keep me busy......Out of the three whole things I have sold in Etsy, two of those things are sets of dominoes......... meaning they comprise 67% of my sold stuff..... HA!And a chick at work wanted a set........Anyway....... someone on Etsy messaged me and asked if I could do a double 12 set........ not that he wanted to buy them...... But I couldn't get the thought out of my head.......... Could I do it with the basic tools I have.........????? (HF bandsaw....... Lowes Drill Press........ Sand Paper.........)Cut...... drilled....... then each piece sanded with 150 grit sandpaper......... they aren't perfect..... so I have lots of room for improvement......... plus I need to learn to Anodize.......91 pieces....... a little over 1000 holes......... a few beers.......... and..... lots of patience......PICS......... Reply:Golly that would make me nerveous drilling all those holes.  Have you thought about doing a set of double 24's.  Ha.   Great Job.   richey
Reply:WOW I can only imagine how long that took. They look great! How thick are they? Reply:I worked on them off and for about a month......1/4 " thick......For the lines down the middle......On the first 40 pieces I used the Dremel tool...... But wasn't happy with the lines because they weren't coming out straight....... I was twisting my wrist each time.......So then I got smarter and made the band saw be horizontal and turned it on..... Pressing them into the blade..... Lines came out much cleaner........ I did that for the remaining 51 piecesI don't think I'll do another set.........it was wearing on me towards the end........Maybe I need to do a kick starter project so I can afford a Mill.........Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:You should go get a harbor freight mill and convert it to CNC. Reply:Nice job...they look great! Now for the $24,000 question...how much for a set?
Reply:That looks like a project that would maximize project time with minimal steel costs!  Great job, especially with the equipment you are using!
Reply:Nice. Even if you had a manual mill it would be much easier. Vice stop, ball end mill the "dots",wash rinse repeat. Center line would be cake as well as squaring up the ends. Reply:Wow! If this is your etsy.com "ad" I can't believe that you are only asking/getting $80 for all the time spent to make these. What is that? Like $2 an hour?Double 12 Aluminum Dominoes SetLincoln v155-s with Tig Welder Ready Pack K2606-1One father's love of his autistic son www.inmyimage.com
Reply:WOW !  That's a lot of work and the BEER must help. I know you're having fun, but did you think about subbing out some of the work ? Maybe something to consider or at least research . You might have them made and just sell them.
Reply:Bistineau....... I think these are around 5lbs...... I haven't weighed them yet but they do fill up a small flat rate box.......Jurgen........ Thanks.......Tradetek...... Yep thats them......... Didn't figure I could get more than that since every piece isn't perfect.......... I sold a stainless set for that much so I used that price point again.......And with the beer....... The project might have broken even....... Or a loss....... I buy good beer........BD1..... Good idea....... It might help get the money to buy the Lincoln engine drive I want....... I  only need to save $20K to get the machine........ Reply:If you want to cut straight lines, my 1st thought would be to set up some sort of saw guide. Since they are alum, you should be able to cut the slot with conventional wood tooling. The pieces are a bit small to try to run thru the table saw ( alt least if you are interested in keeping most of your fingers intact), but a jig set up so you could pass the saw over them would work. I'm thinking along the same lines as some siding saws, or some of the small tile saws where the saw slides on a guide over the material. I'm thinking my 18v cordless saw with the carbide blade. Make a "table" out of 2 pieces of 1/4" plywood set apart the distance of your domino's attached to a base. Drop in all the ones you want to cut, then attach a straight edge to guide the saw and make one pass and groove all the pieces in one shot. If the pieces won't stay down in place while cutting the rest, a small strip of double sides tape would probably keep them in place while you "mill" the slot. In fact thinking about that, if you did that, you probably could run the whole jig thru a conventional circular saw set real shallow with no issues if you are careful.Repetitive processes just beg to use jigs so you can speed up the production..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
