Hey guys, I'm having problems when cutting with my torch, my acetyline is at 10 psi, oxygen at 40psi, when I cut it always leaves the piece still stuck, like the slag stays on, it won't just make a clean cut, i always have to go over it twice no matter how slow i cut.  What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help
Reply:Try more oxygen through the cutting valve, shouldn't need anymore pressure, but you don't list your torch, hose size, tip size, or work piece. With that info help will be better.
Reply:Could you be moving too slow?  For clean cuts your tip needs to be perfectly clean, and travel speed just right.  How thick of material are you cutting?  What size tip are you using?  You should be fine for anything less than an inch with those pressures when using the right tip.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:This subject was pretty well covered in "a good clean cut" ine The General Welding section.
Reply:it's a victor 100fc with a n3 tip, i'm gonna try cleaning the tip and try again, and I'll read that thread too, is there better tip cleaners out there beside the fold up flimsy one I have?
Reply:Sounds like dirty tip, too much heat, and moving too slow. But check the thread oldtimer mentioned as this subject is well discussed in it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:If your cutting 10ga or less, try holding the tip at an angle. On thin material, I'll hold my tip at about 45*. I use #00 tip to cut up to 1/2'' with no problem. One other thing is to make sure you keep the little dark blue flames off of the material. As for tip cleaners, they are flimsy.

Reply:Assuming your cutting 2 inch steel, the #3 tip is fine.I never go over 5 psi on the acetylene also 45 t0 50 on the oxy at that thickness Victor SuperRanger O/A                                         Solar migLincoln Powermig 140Southbend 9in lathe350# kohlswa anvilMiller Maxstar 150 stl etc....
Reply:Jolly Roger, I'm in the Arnaudville area, about 30 miles NNE of Lafayette.
Reply:Ahhh, ok, that's a little ways from here. I've been through Lafayette several times headed to Shreveport. Easiest way to get from here to New Mexico. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Just keep experimenting with the variables-material thickness, oxygen pressure, speed of travel, torch angle, and size of flame to start with. As clark-kentski pointed out, you may have too big of a tip for the material you are working on.As far as the tip cleaner goes, the foldout ones work great for me, but I also keep a pin vise on hand. It looks like a pen, but has a collet on one end and small drill bit storage inside.  Rule of thumb- find the cleaner size that fits, then go down one size to clean the hole.
