I have two TIG torches , a wp17v and a wp09v. The unit I have is a Longevity 185i I use 220 volt its good to 180amps. It is a scratch start DC TIG and it works pretty good. I need to know which welding rods for mild steel I can use with both Torches I have a 3/32 gray tip electrode in each TIG with #6 cup seems to be the norm. I 'm just starting to learn to use the TIG torches and need to purchase welding rods. I will be working on mild steel 1/8 and less to practice. I need some suggestions, and comments if possible. Also and suggestion in settings I was playing around just using the wp17v torch and I slowly started to melt through a 1/8-1/4 piece of I-Beam at 90-100amps. Its a DC TIG, only for steel.
Reply:1/16" E 70 tig rod will do what you want. Amps 100-125. Going on the lower end gives you a bit more control as you can speed up or slow down to control the heat a bit easier than running at 125. 115 is a good average for scratch start on 1/8" steel.I've done a ton of posts on the basics we use to teach beginning tig to students and the drills we have them do. REad a bunch of them and that should give you a good starting point..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
