Ive gathered a few together as I am planning on relocating to Conwy quite soon. I am going to take the plunge, rent a workshop and start out on my own. Planning on advertising for welding work but hopefully my sculpture will keep me busy Attached Images

Reply:shirazman, thanks for posting your work, I enjoyed the pieces and the following comments are not intended in any way to take away from those fine looking sculptures.  My comments are to encourage you to 'keep going' and control the piece totally, I'm saying "Shriaz! control the entire piece; right on down to the ground."If a piece involves a moving animal, like a bird flying, then, without the 'anti-gravity' base which I've not seen for sale recently, your whole composition has to include the base or support as PART of the art.By that I mean that because of the nature of these aggressive snap shots in metal of moving birds in flight,  (I'm suggesting that) the vision and design of the piece includes the base - it's not a base in the classic sense.   These particular supports are a VERY important part of the overall composition of your flying birds. Not so much the standing water birds, their legs can sort of disappear into the grass or a garden's plants and the piece works fine, because we're seeing them walking in water or along the shore in vegetation.  The composition of the bird walking, allows the birds' legs to be the base, but not so for a flying bird.  I'd like to encourage you to consider the pipe to support the raptors; could that have been started in 3", mitered at 15-30 degrees to 2" then down to 1-1/2" and so on for a few miters or bends, and thereby allowing the base/support to become a 'whoosh' of air or streaming water off the fishing bird?  [I've just described a series of random angled tapering tube shapes to give an example not as a suggestion of what you'd draw.]Couldn't the base, if it were part of the composition, be shaped with as much effort and thought as given to the focal point of the piece; be more sculptural and less- "this is a pipe stand"?I realize this is not metal, but its all I have to show for an example without drawing.  This flying bird scene needed the bird out in space- but then what would hold the bird in the log slab  'frame'?  So, I left the 'mountains' as its main support -while trying to get your eye to 'ignore' the mountain background, they're still a part of the overall composition of this 7' long piece of redwood slab. Here's a look behind the focal point bird, I just left the wood behind the animal and 'tucked' the back edges so the support could be part of the full piece but not 'obvious'.  This type of "looking through a log" sculpting form is mounted to a wall and not in-the-round, like your work. I think your work will move to the next level when you begin to include designing your birds so they're supported with integrally formed supports.   Anyway, thanks again for sharing your work, I look forward to some integrated mounts or bases as you take control of "the entire space" around your work.I hope that you won't take my encouragement for you to "think outside the pipe (supports)" as unfriendly?Cheers,Kevin Morin
Reply:I totally agree and have since been using things like you suggest and forming the stands to the sculpture. These stands you see are not intended as part of these ones and are only being used to display them for a couple of days. On all my latest work and more so on the smaller pieces I have been taking a lot of time and thought into mountings and have come up with a few ideas which have offered both strength and aesthetics which im quite pleased with. Once I get settled down in Wales I will get some time to take more pics of the ones I have done.Thank you for your comments and always welcome constructive criticism as quite often the artist doesn't see what the onlooker does.
