I just ordered a Spectrum 375 plasma cutter and I have the choice between using 115V or 230V.  I do have 230V available in my garage.  I am no electrical genius so I was wondering if there was any advantages to using the 230V setup instead of the 115V.Thanks in advance for any information you guys can provide.
Reply:The cutting capacity is reduced when running on 115V power as opposed to when running on 230V power.  But IIRC, the Miller Spectrum 375 has plugs to run on either voltage.  Swap plugs and plug it in and go.  Oops, that's the Spectrum 375 Extreme that has the swappable power-cord adapters. The minimum circuit called out for the regular Spectrum 375 is a 115V 20 amp dedicated branch line (nothing else on the circuit), but a 30 amp 115V dedicated branch line is recommended.  For 230V usage, minimum circuit is a 230V 15A circuit. If you are running it on a 115V 30A dedicated circuit, the capabilities should be the machine's limits.  If you are trying to run it on a smaller than 30A breaker on 115V, the breaker will most likely pop on you if you crank the machine up (the breaker is the limit there).
Reply:thanks for the input, you're right, with the regular 375, you need to cut the plug-in and change it.  I'll probably end up doing that.
Reply:What I did for my dual voltage unit was to put a male 220v plug on the welder and made a 220 to 115 cable in the event I had to use 115 (ie in other peoples garage). Works great. My Photos on Flickr

Reply:First of all I should say, you suck and I am jealous!  I want a 375!!!  That said, you can do 220 or 110 but the 110 will need to be a higher amp fuse to reach the machines limits.  It comes with a 110 plug on it.  Personally if I got one I would wire it 220 just to fit the other welders same type of plug circuit.  Here a sample of in and out amperage from manual.Just noticed that everyone else posted and said the same thing, should have refreshed the post before responding.  Oh well.
Reply:I have the Hypertherm version of the 375.  It works on 110v but it wants alot of juice.  I put a 220v, 20A plug on mine and that's all I run it on.   If you have 220, why not use it?   I liken having 220 available but running the machine on 110 instead, to driving in a snow storm while owning a 4wd and a set of studded snow tires, but putting bald tires on and driving in 2wd.  If you got the good stuff, may as well use it.Warning: If you intend to switch back and forth between voltages, don't forget to flip the voltage selector switch whenever you plug it into a different voltage!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:i have the 375 and made a 110 to 220 cord out of #10 so5 ft. long so i didnt have to cut the org. plug and i getand extra 5 feet
Reply:For gage ,material 115Vac is ok, anything heavier 230 is recommendedLast edited by Cruizer; 03-15-2008 at 11:20 AM.
