Please excuse my simple question as i am new to this wonderful field, i have just bought a new silicon carbide grinding wheel for my bench grinder as i am ready to sharpen my tungsten electrodes he he.I am having difficulty tightening the retaining nut on this new wheel - I cant get a grip of the shaft to hold it to tighten the nut (limited access to shaft) - the only place i can grip is the nut on the other side which comes off when i try to tighten the nut on the new wheel  grrrrrWhat is the correct way of doing this and how do i know when the nut is tight enough ??Many thanksChela
Reply:Hold the nut and turn it on?

Reply:Not to hijack this thread but it's good to hear from Mac again.  Back to the subject I use the slugger wrench method, both methods will work.
Reply:I use the wrench method too. A note on safety: if you ever drop a grinding wheel in the floor, throw it away, DO NOT use it again. They can explode when the grinder is turned on. I only saw this happen once. The man lost a bunch of teeth and his face was disfigured badly.
Reply:slugger wrench method. note they only need to be snug .Life is tuff,so be sharp  lincoln sp 100  cutmaster101  miller bobcat  miller 250 mig  $thousands in snapon
Reply:The slugger wrench method it is....Thank you Guys, have a great day  !!!!Chela
Reply:The shaft on mine has a slot that I can use a screwdriver in to hold it while tightening the nut.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:If You notice..There is a left handed thread and a right handed thread on the arbors..They are like that for a reason..There is no need to tighten the crap out of a wheel..I just hand tighten the bolt and go 1/4 turn after..Like an oil filter..As you use the wheel it's trying to tighten up naturally..No need for emmence torque on the nuts..And thats how it works.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I like the screw driver slot idea SWells, the shafts on mine have what look like conical holes in the ends, cutting a slot may end up damaging the ends - i'm looking at 1/2 inch here with thin walls after the holes in the ends.Zapster's method which i guess is sort of like the slugger wrench method seems less work - if i think about it you are right Zap it will try to tighten itself !Did i mention how awesome this forum is lol Thanks GuysI can now sharpen  my tungsten electrodes and enter the world of TIG CheersChela
Reply:Any impact works best for free-spinning shafts, pneumatic or hammer type.I use my light-weight 3/8" impact on a real low setting to zap the nut on/off. Reply:Zap, you are right that the wheel is trying to tighten if it is on the right side.  On a dual wheel bench grinder the left wheel tries to loosen "unless" it has left hand threads.   The only reason I mention that is I have seen some with left hand threads on the left side, and some that had right hand threads on either side.  I personally have never had a problem just holding the wheel, and snugging the nut with a wrench.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I don't know what method they call this however its worked for me for years.  I put a wrench on the nut after its been finger tightened. Then I grap the wheel and give a turn so that the other end of the wrench taps against the table.  Just rotate it and let the wrench bump the table and it snugs it up tight without being too tight.  I guess its a form of the hammer bump mentioned above however its less likely to overtighten the nut.MichaelMillermatic 25115" Rockwell Drill Press10" Logan Lathe5hp - 2-stage 80 Gallon CompressorHome Made Sand / Soda Blaster
