Reply:Hello Zapzoo, any welding process that utilizes DC current can be susceptible to magnetic arc blow(there is also a type of arc blow that is related to thermal conditions, that's why I specified "magnetic"). A few examples: if you have 2 welders working on welding fillet welds on the same "t" section you will generally position one welder's arc a bit ahead of the other welder's arc and not directly across from one another. If 2 sub-arc units are operating in a similar fashion those arcs would generally be staggered as well. Newer sub-arc AC based variable arcs can be directly across from one another as they are on different/altenating arc polarities as welding progression occurs. Try welding a fillet weld with a set-up magnet in place on the other side of the vertical member of the weld joint, you'll definitely notice "arc-blow". Just a few examples of what you are asking about. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Thanks.  I'm looking into some new welding equipment I'm trying to gauge all the variables.  One of the things I want to purchase is either a Bobcat 250 or a Trailblazer 275.  I'm leaning to the trailblazer.  From what I have read the trailblazer is a better welder than the bobcat.  I'm trying to make a decision on these two machines.  I'm trying to judge if having AC welding capability out weighs the merits of the trailblazer.  I'm also looking into some New equipment for my garage.  I'm going to keep my AC/DC buzz box.  I'm looking into getting a mig or one of those TA 211i or TA 252i
Reply:I worked for a company that had electron beam welders, 4 to be exact and they trained me To operate one for a year or so while I was Tig welding their stuff... It was a very busy  place and I didn't get as much time on the EB Welders as I would have liked. The Normaltime period to learn the machine is five years and it usually does expensive parts. We welded alot of stuff for the government space program. Now this was the first time I ever saw a beam bend because of magnetic Force and it does raise havoc with the CNC program they use to weld with.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:The whole Accelerator is made up of copper and the parts hanging down are super powerful magnets that we EB welded inside of the copper housing.....The beam would actually bendand move away from the weld joint making it very difficult to complete the weld...This particular accelerator was 22 miles long and assembled in New Mexico.....   http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...estproject.jpgYou don't want to know how much it cost to build and install, we worked on the magnet housing for over a year...Last edited by B_C; 03-11-2013 at 08:17 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
