After seeing a simple shackle attached to a tube priced around $45 at TSC, I figured I'd make me a tow hook.  And if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.Hook is plasma cut from 1" thick plate.  The tube itself is 1/4" wall 2" square tube, with a 3/8" mounting plate.  The steel rod is 3/4" CRS, and goes through the hook, and welded in place.  All welded with Spray Transfer MIG at roughly 250 amps using 95/5 Ar/o2 gas.Total cost:  $12 for the shackle.  The rest came from the scrap bin.  If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.  You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Nice job.  Goof color. That way when some bozo doesn't hit the brake in traffic in time he gets to see what's going to cut his car's front end in halfHey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!
Reply:Looks good. Be careful pulling with that, pull in a straight line. I don't think the 1/4" wall tube will fail but it could. I have a shackle hitch similar to that but its solid 2"X2" steel with a hole drilled in it for the hitch pin and the other end is cut/drilled so a shackle will fit in it. Don't think it will break anytime soon.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:On a side note, I love having access to a Burny 10 CNC machine with a Hypertherm HT2000 on it.  She's old, but she does the job.  Took 10 mins to draw and export the DXF file, 20 mins to set up the plasma with the right consumables and dial in the gas mixture (oxygen enriched plasma with nitrogen shield), and about 60 seconds to cut it out.You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Looks good.Just don't mention that you'll be pulling a school bus full of nuns......... the "Experts" here will scold you."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Psh... I plan on towing School buses full of nuns and children and puppies and Bibles from the firey gates of Hades whilst blaring the Battle Hymn of the Republic on the radio and waving the American flag out the window.  I'm sure the Pope will be there too.  And if his popemobile gets stuck in the lava, I'll pull him out too.You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:nice! Chances are whatever strap you are using will snap before the hook would give. I  have seen plenty of burried trucks in the mud being snatched on by the factory hitch, the strap is what always lets go.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:Nicely done.  I upgraded to a locking pin to keep the freakin meth heads from ripping off my trailer hitch.  With that color, it's going to get some attention.

Reply:Very cool, very different, and looks great and will serve its purpose. I think the shackle screw may vibrate out after a while tho. Maybe drill and put a cotter pin in it. Otherwise cool stuff bro I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
