Whats the best technique to cut lap welds with a torch w/o ruining the pieces of steel, just cutting the weld, thanks for any help or pics
Reply:A scarf tip. Looks like a regular tip but bent so you can get in close and blow the slag out at an angle.
Reply:What he said..Or get a carbon arc gouging setup..It's like a torch on steroids.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:if your not good with a torch, you will destroy it, even with a scarfing tip.  Sheet metal? small plate? heavy plate?
Reply:i have cut out welds with a torch, but i don't know if it is safe or not.  it was taught to me by an old pipe welder and i have used it successfully saving both parent metals.the process is turn your oxygen all the way down on your regulator.  then open our oxygen valve on your cutting head all the way.  the third step is to press your cutting lever all the way down and while it is down slowly turn up your regulator tee till the flame is neutral and you have a small cutting stream of oxygen.  i don't know how low the pressure is on the o2 regulator, but i will look tomorrow when i get to work.  it works especially well with scarfing tip.like i said i don't know if running a tip this low is safe, but it works.
Reply:i forgot to add that you aim the cutting stream along the joint if it is sheet metal and into the joint if it is plate and there is a heavy weld.  you will get the hang of it pretty quickly.  the flame just whispers as it eats the metal.
Reply:The scarfing tip is something I have yet to have a go at. I was attemting to scarf some welds off of a practice plate at school, back in the fall semester of 2006, when a very nice young lady came upon me doing things all wrong. It turned out she was, and is, a local Iron Worker! Well, she gave me some much needed pointers and I have been torch happy ever since!  I like to scarf downhill when possible to allow gravity to aid in removing molten slag. Watch somebody do it who is really good, that helped me immensely! City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Practic, practice, practice as with any cutting or welding process. I quit messing with all the regulator adjusting a long time ago after experimenting and figureing out what I could do. Most of the time they are set ar 10 and 40 pounds. I adjust my heating flame to what I need  for the size material I'm working on and then feather the oxygen lever for the amount of oxygen needed to make the scarf. I also do the same thing when making a regular cut. Thinner plate, less oxygen, thicker plate, just push the leaver further. Yes, I do change tip size but each tip has a range of thicknesses it will handle and yes, you will have to adjust your regulator pressure at times, just not every time you change thicknesses of material or tip size. If this didn't work and work well I wouldn't post it here.
Reply:Thanks for all the help guys, sorry I took so long to reply back, It was an old worn out 5th wheel plate on a water trailer that I had to cut out and put a new plate, i'll post pics soon.  Don't you just hate it when your torching something and the sparks just magicly spray your face
