I was reading a recent post about A/O tanks, being customer owned or rented, and i was wondering...I have two tanks, one has no collar on it and the other tank does (ST.James welding Co.) the man i got the tanks from said he owned them both. My question is, is it possible to remove the collar that is on the one tank, I know the refill place won't like it with the St. James logo on it. doesn't the collar just screw off, it does look that way....
Reply:I know the hydro shop I used to deal with would change out collars on occasion. I want to say they were pressed on vs screwed on, but it's been quite a few years since I dealt with them. I know they also would take a grinder to them to remove markings ( They would buy up cylinders from companies swapping out from steel to alum and then  do swaps with some of their major customers so the customer didn't have to wait while they did hydros on several hundred cylinders at a time while the ships sat in port) and then paint over them when done..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:They don't screw off. They require a strong, specialty puller and you very rarely find blank necks. DId you VISIT the refill place? Tell them it was an owner cylinder and see if they'll hydro it and fill it for you if they won't swap.An 80-grit flap disc used CAREFULLY will take the names off smoothly. Most overpaint was done by brush or sloppy spraying.
Reply:I was wondering about grinding if off, but some places around here are slevie....I was going to try and unscrew it then put it in my lathe and work it smooth, repaint it and swap it for a full bottle. I'll have to look real close, i never thought that it may be pressed on....

Reply:The collar is held on by peening the edges of the extension of the cylinder that the valve is threaded into.  This is why your are not supposed to lift by the cap, as the cap threads are part of the collar.  Removing the collar will almost certainlyprobably remove that ability to put on the cap.  You may find yourself liable for damaging somebody else's property.  Galiso makes a bunch of collar tools if you can get some type of collar that states customer owned, and could get somebody to put them on,  maybe that would be ok.  They also make very thin collar covers that glue over the existing collar.  Gotta look hard for somebody that will do all of this for youExperience is something you get right after you need it
Reply:Yea, I will see what the MAN says, right now it's about half full, so it will be awile before i head up there. These fill places are getting fewer and further apart, I have a choice of three (that i know of) all are 60 or more miles away......round trip....

Reply:I would think any cylinder(including the neck ring) that is ground on would be gong fodder.
Reply:I had a tank that I used a small die grinder on to take the embossed name off the ring then I filled the stamped name in that was on the tank with car body filler. Sanded it smooth and repainted it. You would never know it was a company tank at all no matter how close you looked at it. I have even taken my own number stamps and re-certified my own tanks before. Just stamp the new year and date in it then put the + symbol and a star symbol after that. The + means fives years and the star after it adds another five years to it for the next certification time. Face it how often did you ever see a tank made as strong as these go bad that they failed the certification or was unsafe? Ive been around them all my life and never seen one get rejected that my dad had or myself either. Now if you find one that is all rusted up on the outside of the tank then you may have a bad one but get one from inside a shop all its life out of the weather I never have seen a bad one there.

Reply:Those are the Galiso tools up above, you can see how the threads that hold the cap on are just part of the collarExperience is something you get right after you need it

Reply:I removed the collar off a bottle a while back. It wasn't attached to the threads like those pics. It was just galvanized steel ring that was glued down with a really tough rubbery glue. Hammer and chisel did the job. Had another different gas company name under it. If I knew where it was Id take a picLincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.

Reply:I have a couple of the 300 sized tanks that I have not been able to get refilled. I will have to try grinding the name off the collar and repainting it. Otherwise, they are headed to scrap yard.
Reply:Here the 300s are lease only. They make good garden bells, or dump them on CL.
Reply:My owned MIG bottle has an airgas collar on it which I have filled by different supply store.
