OK I understand not a welding question but ......I have talked to a few, looked on the net a bunch, and called implement dealers and have had little confidence in there answers. How do measure a plow? (here is a link to what I think is the answer)http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/a...0-p9070043.jpgWhat would be max size plow size?Tractor is John Deere 4100 20HP 4 wheel drive diesel.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:20hp MIGHT pull a 14" moldboard plow in easy soil. Single bottom only. A two bottom might be too much, actually would be WAY too much.Single bottom would work if you're careful, and don't really push it too hard. If it looks like it's a strain, give it up.A small 3pt plowing/offset disc might be better for such a tractor as yours. We're off to a movie, maybe have time to send some links tomorrow"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Thanks I was hoping you would see this.Have fun at the movie. Is the link/picture show the proper way to measure a plow? I agree two bottom is way way to much.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Plows are measured by the length of share. The usual lengths are 12", 14", and 16".Bottoms are the shins, shares, moldboards, and frogs of a single unit.20 HP would be best with a single 12" bottom to be sure it would work in several different soil conditions. 14" would be iffy unless it was loose loamy soil.My recommendation would be a light duty 5' disc. An offset disc may be a "tail wagging the dog" situation so a tandem disc would be preferable. Attached Images
Reply:My John Deere B is only 24hp and will pull 2-14's. HEE, HEE!That 4 wheel drive Diesel will pull a single 14" probably pretty easy. The Diesel will have more torque than a Gas engine.
Reply:Thanks guysWe have a disk but it does not break up the ground the way I want. The farmer down the road has done some plowing for us but he plows so deep I fear I will get lost is furrowI have been looking on craigslist and see a few single bottom plows. Here is a link to a picture. The share is the unpainted section. Just measure its length????????????????????????? https://www.google.com/search?q=leng...l%3B1024%3B765Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:How much area are you planning to plow ? Is is grass weeds right now ? You maybe ahead to have farmer field cultivate instead of plowing. If it's a smaller area , what about a rototiller for tractor ? That would be a one time field work.If you plow, now you gotta disc it to break up sod and big junks. There's a lot of field work to get it ready to plant or seed.
Reply:Think of it this way. That link made a green plow with a unpainted cutting edge??OK, think how the cutting edge starts at the side where the point is, then go straight across.Sight down your tape measure when you see the far /opposite edge. This will give the width of the cut which is relative to the length of the share. That one in the photo looks to be 12 inch.
Reply:Here is a new and used 14" share. It is 14" in length. The bottom worn share is lying on top of a new one. Attached Images
Reply:From experience, the recommendations of the folks above are spot on. We used a 95hp JD to till the 6.5 acres of alfalfa the first year as we had it to break through the weed/root/crust layer on that parcel. Lots of H2O. Lots of manuer spreading and tilling and just working the land with a hi-torque tractor pulling a 7-tooth, 72" gannon/box and finish till. After the three cuttings we got that year, planting for the second year was rather easy for our regular, much less expensive JD 5320. Adjust for nitrate levels, order some RoundUp ready seed, plow and plant. So done properly, the first year of a long-dormant field in the hardest part. After the first year, easy pickins.

Reply:Here's a fun read. Back when they ploughed instead pf plowed. http://issuu.com/amberlady/docs/good...040525/2623986"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:A roto would sure be the ticket too. We didn't get one because the Gannon and rippers do well on our soil so we put that same $1400 into an auger but a roto, especially with a 75 or 100 gallon water tank on the rear would be the ticket assuming he has a PTO. All depends on what his long-term plans are.

Reply:I pull a two bottom 18" moldboard behind my 75HP 4wd tractor. In tough soil it'll spin the wheel. 4wd and/or the rear diff lock help a lot. On a smaller tractor, traction will probably be more of an issue than horsepower. You can always choose a lower gear to stay within your horsepower limits. Additional tractor weights, water in the wheels, or a front end loader bucket full of dirt may help.I'd stick to a smaller single bottom. Pre-ripping with a subsoiler may help if you're breaking virgin ground.
