Went and looked at this this morning, planned on bringing it home today but it didnt happen... Anyways Im picking it up on monday. seems like an old pipeline bed. Putting it on my 95 one ton. going to sand blast and paint, after I do some changing around on the bed. It has a drop down for the welder but my vantage wont fit, some I have to make some supports to go across it so It can sit over it. The crane, ladder rack or whatever it is on the back is going to be cut off. the fuel tank on the front will most likely be removed, and I will find a place to mount my compressor. The only bad part on it is around the tail lights... I will need to cut it out and patch it, trying to figure out what to do about that. Im wanting to make it look more personalized while I repair the rust. Heres the pics.I kind like these lead lockers on the backThe boxes on the bed have a door that drops down with shelves, then you unsrew the top and it hinges up. bottle racks on both sides with locks, and another set of boxes on bottom of the box. The bed will be going black, Im pretty excited about getting out and starting to do some work on the side. So far I have very little invested. Here is the truck its going on
Reply:That's a good find with alot of the hard work already done for ya.
Reply:Very cool design.
Reply:thanks. It def. needs some work to make it do what I want it to. but I will be ahead in time and money once I get done, and I think it is a neat design as well.
Reply:looks like it came off a Ford. Are you going to have issues with frame width? Reason I ask, I had a bed setup for a '90 chevy, and sold it to a friend for his '78 ford. The frame width was different between the two. I remember I added a piece of 2" channel on each side of the bed, but don't remember if it was on the inside or the outside, so it would fit his ford.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
Reply:Also, if it was on a ford, I think at one time they had 3 different rearend widths. Narrow cab and chassis, wide cab and chassis and dually. That's probably not the right terms, but i had a welder that always ran Ford trucks that explained that to me. I think his bed was setup for the wide cab and chassis (which would be the medium width) but it might have been the dually. He ran a 12' bed. Best rigged up rig I was ever around. I've gotten a lot of ideas for mine off his rig. Probably why my truck is so damn heavy...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
Reply:it was recently on an 06 chevy. but I posted a pic on a Facebook group and someone commented that they used to own the bed and had it on an F350. the width of the deck is fine and will work on my truck, I will have to make mounts either way so Im not too worried about the frame.
Reply:Cool project keep us posted, i'm sure it will look brandy new when your done. I gotta do the same soon. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I know the back end of the truck will look a LOT better than the front end! I wish I had the time to paint it while Im finishing up the bed, but I need to get it all together, so it will have to wait. I picked up a gas powered compressor yesterday, I will mount it between the boxes on the bed. I also will mount a hose real, probably a real for the torches as well.
Reply:"The crane, ladder rack or whatever it is on the back is going to be cut off."That is actually called a hoosier pole. Pipeliners use it to extend over the line to hold their umbrella & hang their leads on while traveling between welds. Reply:Cool. Should turn out nice for you. I was going by the dual fuel fillers both on the same side for it coming off a Ford. Either way, it's Steel. Nothing that can't be modified. Reply:Picked it up today, its a little rougher than I thought. The whole thing is full of bondo. Im guessing they didnt get it slick when they built it so they caked it on there. im going to patch up the rough spots and paint it black, and put a good undercoating on and just mount it. Had a friend with an industrial pressure washer take the bedliner off and some of the loose paint tonight

Reply:This guy knows his stuff. The truck came with a regular dually bed. Not sure on the bed I got tho. I will make it fit the frame. The only thing I need to check us where my wheel wells will end up. I'm sure I will be able to make it work. I will unload it in a day or two and remove my old bed. Start taking measurements and see where it will end up. Then start undercoating

Reply:Originally Posted by OldSchoolPSDFord had two frame widths and 3 rear end widths. 37 inch was a pickup frame, 34 inch was a cab and chassis frame. Pickups had two rear axle widths, 65" single wheel and 68" dual wheel. Cab and chassis rears where all 66.5" as ford did not offer a single wheel cab and chassis until 1999. Cab and chassis trucks are 60" cab to axle (for 8-9' bodies, from there it goes up 84", 102", ect) while a pickup is 57" cab to axle. That is true for Gm, dodge, and ford. From the pic it looks like you have a cab and chassis truck with 34" wide frame rails and 60" cab to axle. If the body was built for a ford cab and chassis it should go right on. If it was built on a dually pickup it will be too wide and 3" too short. The only thing that changes between ford chassis cab and Chevy chassis cab is the fill neck.If your truck was built as a pickup, your frame rails will be wider (I don't recall how wide on a Chevy) and your cab to axle will be 57". If that is the case you may not be able to get the wheel well centered over the wheel.
Reply:Unless it's free (and probably even then) you're better off building your own.Sound welding beds don't sit in the dirt in the present oil/gas economy.Rusted out ones do, and they present a ton of rehab and they bend where they shouldn"t, when they shouldn't.Better to build YOUR dream bed (even a cheap one) than try to repair and modify someone else's (wore out, discarded) dream bed.Just my take based on living with many welding beds, good luck with it regardless.Lead wells got popular once the tweakers learned that welding lead = a lot of dope when they are stolen and sold to the scrapyard. But they are inconvinient and slow compared to old elkhorn/pronghorn hangers. They will also generate a lot of heat if you run high amps with the leads coiled up. Heat kills leads, and a good set of is about $2,000 today. They do look better at the grocery store, that's for sure.JTMcCLast edited by JTMcC; 05-09-2013 at 05:39 PM.
Reply:I'd really like to build my own bed. And I was going too. And still am. I will have very little time in this bed. Remember. I'm not hitting the pipeline. I'm putting this together while I'm finishing school. Once I make some money with it and get a better truck I will make my dream bed. But for this will do just fine
Reply:I thought this picture was funny. Figured why go through the trouble of mounting it, I will just run like this!(the trailer the welder is sitting on is going to be used for my cooker project, should see a thread on it soon) I got a call from the guy whos helping me, he said he pulled the bed off the truck and pressure washed up under it (he does commercial pressure washing, and builds his own rigs, they are stout!) Going down this afternoon do some more work on it
Reply:You should sell me that body...Beck's Welding and Fabrication, Inc.-Misc. Metals Fabrication & Installation-
Reply:Make me an offer!I did some measuring, the mounts on the bed are 34" IIRC same as my frame, and the tires should center in the wheel wells, or at least be very closeAny update, or progress?
Reply:I helped the guy who's going to help me set mine on the truck finish the welding on his flat bed this week. he pressurewashed the underside of mine again. If the weather cooperates this week I will go and paint the underside and set it on the truck, and do the rest of the work with it mounted. Pics will be up when I make some progress
Reply:well. plans have changed, after looking at the bed more and more, It wasnt exactly what I wanted and I didnt want to put a lot of work into something I wasnt going to keep. I decided to change directions. My goodfriends grandfather owns a logging company and is selling of his 02 f350. He is letting it go for 5k. 200k miles 7.3 4x4 spd. I couldnt say no. So im mounting the welder in the service bed and going to work. should pick it up next week.
Reply:Good looking truck. I like the mags, too.
Reply:my girlfriend likes this one a lot better too. lol. I will put some meetier tires on it eventually. and i know i will like the power of the 7.3 compared to the 6.5
Reply:Dambed CJ, I'm guessing you don't live in the NW. That's a very pretty Powerstroke, and the last logging crummy I picked up had enough dirt in the cab to grow potatoes, and waves in the sheetmetal that made North Shore surfers drool! Yea, it looked like it bounced off every tree in the Cascades. Reply:Your dad is not too far from me. I live in the York/Rock Hill area. just south of charlotte. Yes It is my best friends grandfather who had the truck, he is a successful logger and said he got all his money out of it. It will need tires soon, and the turn signal lens is broken, it needs buffed/polished to remove all those logging pin stripes. a few latches on the bed replaced and a good interior scrub. but for the price I didnt have a choice.
