During our forging class we took a tour of the Pitcairn estate and museum  called Glencairn that is part of the BrynAthyn historical district right across the street form the college. The classes being offered are a continuation of the mind set that built the house and near by cathedral. Glencairn has some of the best metal work I've ever seen, all done individually by hand by craftsmen on site, most of it during the height of the depression.http://www.glencairnmuseum.org/Not a lot on the metal work, but this video gives some good background on the concepts behind Glencairn and the cathedral.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f81DSQ8aWd4[/ame]Most of the "iron work" is all done in monel that they then antiqued to look like weathered bronze. They wanted a material that would last forever.Front entrance doors. All done in hand forged monel.Last edited by DSW; 07-16-2013 at 08:30 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The courtyard doors off the main hall are one of the few places in Glencairn where the metal work isn't monel. The copper doors open out into the inner courtyard, and the bronze ones open onto the terrace. Again all hand worked. each one of the monel "disks" is unique. They didn't want any piece to be an exact copy of any other piece anywhere in the house since no two items are ever the same in nature.Last edited by DSW; 07-16-2013 at 08:22 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Picts of the bronze doors. Also the newer handrails our instructor made for the museum  a few years back. Monel was cos prohibitive, but they managed to antique stainless so it's impossible to tell the difference between it and the monel elsewhere..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Some interior picts of some details. Fireplace accessories and heating grate. All done in forged monel with pass thru joints and collars..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I consider myself a decent fabricator/welder but when i see old or new forging it really amazes me how little i know in metal fabrication. It makes what we build everyday seem so elementary. Great photos!! Thanks for sharing...

Reply:Like it or not ever since electric welding was developed and put into use the quality of metalwork has significantly decreased.most of the knowledge has been lost.the tomb of Emperor Maximillian I is quite possibly the best example of forged ironwork ever produced.in today's terms projects like that would cost 40 million euros maybe double that or triple that.back then though this was significant technology and advertisement to (God) if you Beleive those thingsI have been fortunate to learn a little from some people that still live in that type of mentalitythis was all made the hard and the slow way nearly the same way the would have 500 years ago Attached Imageshttp://www.forgingtechnology.com/
