I know, language changes.Like:Begging the question used to refer to an argument which relied on circular reasoning, and now it is usurped to mean 'demands that the question be asked'.Anyway, when I started out, vertical was a position, and a vertical weld was a position weld. An overhead weld was a position weld, and if you were making a connection between say, a 90 and existing pipe, which could not be rolled or flipped, it was a position weld. You had to weld it in position.Nowadays, folks are saying they had to weld it out of position.Nope, that is the position it is in.I don't care what the trend is, I will be in my room at the old folks home calling them position weldsHobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Reply:Well unless you speak Latin,  any living language is constantly evolving and changing.  New words and word meanings constantly developing.   My bet is educational instructors and institutions and social media such as youtube where folks started referring to non flat or horizontal weld as "out of position"  with language what is important whether or not the listener understands the speaker's meaning....   Now go back to your bingo game Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:I guess I'm some kind of weirdo but I have always just called what it is. If I weld a vertical I say "hey had to run that vertical". And so on.

Reply:If you've squirmed into a tight spot to make a vertical weld and have to use a #10 lense in torch goggles because there's no room for a hood, then I'd call that "out of position", LOL!!                                             MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:I'll come visit y'all.  Irregardless of all the complaining! That word bothers me so much I had a hard time typing it.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Vertical up/down, overhead and flat. What other positions are there? Is this when you weld while doing a headstand?

Reply:22 posts and we still have no real clarification! So my input, flat and horizontal is in position. Vertical and overhead are out of position. Just what I always figured."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:I did some extensive research on this in the last 24 hours, and found this out.It seems several years ago a 14 year old kid walked into a Harbor Freight store, and bought a 99 dollar flux-core only machine, so he could become a welder. He went home, got on his 1700 dollar computer, printed out a welding certificate on his 500 dollar printer, and hung it on his wall. Then, again on his $1700 computer, he joined a welding forum, and mistakenly referred to a vertical weld as an out of position weld, and the rest is history. This can be verified by snopes, which I think is actually a different 14 year old kid on his $3,000 computer with banks of blade servers.Change is progress.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind.
