Hey guys I stopped at a local habitat for humanity store and found some welding rods, I picked up Lincoln JETWELD LH-70  7018 H4R 1/8th 10 lbs in a sealed can. Age is unknown but its sealed and I also found a 50lbs box of 3/32 which is hermetically sealed, They want $25 for the 50lbs can which I didn't get but do you guys think its a good deal ? Any opinions on the LH-70 rods ?  I might go back today and pick it up.
Reply:That's a steal. sent while goofing off at workLong after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain. Both of my Poppy's 1954 Short Hoods -Third generation to weld with it and teaching a fourthSA 2## - Bought and sold more than I can remember or care to list, 8 in the shop right now

Reply:LH-70 is my favorite 7018.

Reply:92dlxman, I think your right.    As the way I remeber it, jetweld was 7024.    I remeber when I started seeing it on 7018 cans, and it got me scratching my head also.

Reply:It maybe now, but not was.     In the mid 80s I remeber jetweld specifically meaning 7024.
Reply:sorry you may be correct.   92 and I, got Jetweld mixed up w/ Jetrod.   Jetrod was 7024
Reply:I didn't make it in time but the good thing is the store is closed on Sundays so I will be heading out Monday to pick them up.  I haven't tried the rods yet but I am sure its better stuff then what I get from the hardware store. Cans are in good shape so I am guessing most of the rods on the big tin box will be in good condition.
Reply:I used to buy 1/8" LH-70, and really liked them.   I've since switched to Blueshield 7108, but I wouldn't hesitate to grab more of the Lincoln if I found a great deal.
Reply:Holy smokes, that's 50 cents a pound. I wish they had one of those stores around here.Craftsman 90 amp Arc welder
Reply:So I finally picked up the 50lbs box of jetweld, I have plenty of rods now Before I crack the box I was thinking of vacuum sealing 2-3lbs at a time to keep the rods as fresh as possible, Think its a good idea? My plan includes flooding the package with argon or mix gas to displace the oxygen before vacuum sealing but I don't know if that would be good or bad, I never had to heat up rods as I usually don't do anything structural or critical in the shop. Maybe I am putting to much thought into the displacement of oxygen but I do like the idea of storing my rods in small quantities for small jobs.

Reply:I think purging them before vacuum sealing would be great but when you vacuum seal it pulls all the air out. Reply:They still make em Iron Powder 7018 love or hate it ,made 3/32 to 3/8 " AC works best.

Reply:So I cracked the box open today and stored all the rods away, I found 21 slightly chipped but useable rods and one naked rod out of the whole bunch. Time to practice running some beads with this rod, Should be better than the lowes rods I have been using for many years.

Reply:Little update, I finally tried the jetweld and it worked very good, better then the stuff I use from lowes. Once dialed in the slag starts coming off on its own.
Reply:The OCV on my engine drive is 24v, 45v on you machine seems like a lot.  Wonder if it's the reason it sorta looks like self shielding flux core wire.  No fine ripples.Give it a shot at 24v, and see how you like it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Originally Posted by NinjaRayI can't change the voltage but I will check to see what it welds at, as for the lack of ripples that's all me since I went a little to slow. I noticed that the dig settings make a lot of difference when welding 6010 and 7018.
Reply:Originally Posted by farmersammYou know..I didn't realize that there was a broader range of OCV specs out there.  I looked at the specs on the Idealarc, and it goes to 70 OCV.  So I'm probably wrong.
