Hey guys, I got a side job where I have to cut and install a backstop at a firing range, the old one is pitted to hell, and in some places it's been blown through.I'm replacing it with AR500 or AR550 steel set at a 33.5° angle, and the dimensions are 8ft by 15ft.So 4, 4x8x1/plates, completely welded seams, how hard is this stuff to bevel? Because I would like to get decent penetration because I have to grind the weld face completely flat, and the backside will be inaccessible to be once these are in placeThanks guysP.s., I'll be plasma cutting that last foot off, don't worry, I can do math!Miller Spoolmate 200 w/t S-52 WirefeederMM 211'09 Miller Trailblazer 302

Reply:Tack it on and gouge a groove with air-arc or run your torch on a piece of angle with the point up.
Reply:I make targets out of AR500 steel.  I don't handle nearly large sizes of the steel as described by the OP, but my "dinner plate" sized or "torso" sized pieces get beveled with a plasma cutter and free hand.  The angle grinder works great.....at making you an expert at replacing the grinding discs quickly like a pro!Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:3/8" AR500, IPSC torso targets for long range work.  Straight edge angled & tacked in place and ride the lightning with my Hypertherm PowerMax 45.  Cuts like butter."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:7018 is fine. Use some pre-heat, and wrap the weld zone with house insulation for a slow cool down. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:They beat me to it field beveling with angle iron and grind smooth and burn it with LH 70 5/32...7/32 if your machine can handle it.... unless you have a wire feederif you do that with 1/8 you're going to get in lots of practice...lots and lotsBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:How thick of plate were you using? Its not 1" plate?
Reply:Beveled tons of AR  plate using an arc gouger. 1/2 carbon and go to town.if your machine can't handle that use the biggest it can.  Actually very easy after you have done it a few times. Very little grinding. You could even tack tight and gouge a groove. 7018 will work great for welding it. If you have a wire feeder some 1/16 or 3/32 dual shield wire wouldBe perfect. McKay makes good wire for that. I have never had a problem with welds cracking on ar 500 without any post heat or insulation. 550 might. Sounds like a cool project.
Reply:If its all horizontal I would just groove the top plate and do a J groove.
Reply:Check with your supplier before you commit to 4x8 sheets. My supplier brings it in on rail in 60' lengths and cuts it down. Order it 8x15 and your done.
Reply:Plates of AR500 4'X 8' X 1" are expensive and dang heavyHe runs a TB like me so 5/16 carbons is the biggest he can run he would do better and faster to use O/A with an angle iron guideTack and root with 1/8 7018 clean with stringer brush and get either 5/32 or 7/32 7018 rod and crank itand MJD is right if it's going to be horizontal just bevel the top plate and stack and tackAt least that the way i would do it and i'm not the sharpest tool in the drawerBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ??
