I accidentally recieved 10 .020 electrodes, and seeing as they were .30 each, I figured 'what the hell', I will learn how to work with these. Since most of what I am welding is less than 2 mm thick, I *think* they should be a good match. Two questions, though, 1, can I use mig wire as filler? Obviously I need some really thin wire! 2: any observations/tips on using electrodes this small? Thanks, everyone!Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons
Reply:I often use stainless mig wire with .040 tungstens. I've never had any issues with the welds.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:I use 0.040" tungstens, but that's small enough for me.You can use any solid mig wire (not flux core).  Welding supply.com sells tig filler rod in 36" lengths in very small diameters like mig wire also (I think they go as low as 0.030").If the tungstens are not perfectly straight, it's tough to get a uniform point on them because when you "spin" it from the bottom, the tip ends up wobbling around and not contacting the grinding surface consistently.  That's the only thing I don't like about them. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:@ rideit - reference http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=42328.  Miller recommends amperage ranges with 0.02 (1mm) electrodes of 15-40A (DC-) & 15-35A (AC, w/ 65% DCEN).  The 0.020s should work down to the 24g range.  BUT, as the above WW thread warns, "if see wetting, add filler and move on; if see sig puddling, the part may be smoked".  Also, pulsing with these thinner metals is an aid.  You can use an appropriate MIG filler to TIG.  Done it a few times with scraps."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:Thanks guys. I have been using the .04, and experienced the bending, definitely have to be careful with that. I think cutting them in 1/2 first would be beneficial.Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons
