You guys that do a lot of MIG welding do you push or pull the weld.....and why ???
Reply:It all depends on the situation. Material thickness, out of position, sometimes you have no room to do it the way you want. Me by nature i'm a puller. I just love pulling it. Sometimes I wish I could just start YANKIN IT  I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:We teach push at the tech school. Most guys who can push the weld have no trouble dragging the weld, but guys who drag usually find pushing to be harder to pick up. We do this for several reasons. One of the biggest is that when you push you reduce the total heat input vs dragging. A couple of companies who hire out of the tech school do production sheet metal and want to run hot and fast to maintain a high rate of production, but also need to reduce warpage.  Another guy works with high tensile steels and managing total heat input is critical and all his procedures from the manufacturers specify pushing the weld with mig.Alum mig is another area where you want to push vs drag.Biggest issue I find with guys trying to learn to push is getting themselves positioned so they can see the bead clearly. Too many guys want to sit behind the gun and try to look thru the nozzle. That just doesn't work with push. You need to get out in front of the gun and look down the barrel to see what is going on..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I prefer to push.  Going right to left & being right handed, I can see the puddle easier as I'm positioned off to the left of the nozzle.  To see the puddle when I pull, I feel out of place because I'm leaning over the right side of the nozzle, almost like a backhanded technique.Heavier material, I just crank up the machine & slow down to build the heat if necessary.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Whatever is convenient. I weld a lot of 16 ga tubing in mitered corners. For the sinside and outside corners I drag downhill, when I move to topside i usually push. This is mostly to help control the heat and prevent burning through the thinner edges of the top side. If I pull that joint it will often drop a hole righ about in the middle of the weld. Pushing helps me to move faster, adding less heat. I could just turn down the welder a little, but all that turning up and down adds up on a weeks long project.
